To me the 45 colt only makes sense if you shoot traditional cowboy. Sure they can be handloaded to 44 mag power at about 10% lower pressure becasue of the larger case capacity, but if you need that much power, get a 454 which there are many of in the 700-900 range.  Over the counter +p is very expensive.

The 44 is defiantly very versatile as they come in every shape and size and manufacturer brand to suit your personal style. Ammo for deer is reasonable priced and readily available. You can buy very stout hard cast rounds for larger game. Any bullet development in pistol ammo is definitely done on the 44 first. I would go out on a limb and say the 44 mag is the 30-06 of the pistol world. Been around a while and will do 95% of what needs getting done without a fuss. Not the sexiest round around, but doesn't need to be.
