cleaning question
« on: January 20, 2008, 07:16:29 AM »
I just got back from the range with my 45-70.  I just went to clean it before putting it back in the safe and noticed what looks like crap on the lands.  This rifle only has 60 rounds put through it to date.  I have only been shooting jacketed bullets in this gun.  Could this be copper fouling or just machining marks from the factory?  I ran a brush through it probably 10-15 strokes with hoppe's and it didn't seem to make any difference.  Does anyone else see similar spots/crude on their lands?

If your using the standard hoppes it will not remove copper, and the hoppes copper solvent isn't very aggressive so if that is what you used let it sit in the bore a while then scrub it.  I like to use a good copper solvent (butches bore shine, shooters choice, sweets, etc) when I need to clean a rifle fast.  If it can go a while I'll use a foaming bore cleaner and let it sit a few hours.  I would try cleaning it good with a good solvent and see if what you are seeing comes out.  If the gun only had 60 rounds thru it it may have some rough spots or tool marks that are catching some copper.  You may also consider running a tight patch through it with some JB's on it to polish the bore.
