Anyone ever have a SRH 454 shortened?
« on: January 08, 2008, 02:57:54 PM »
I have a SRH 454 Casull.  It has a pretty serious barrel constriction.  I know I can firelap it and remove the constriction but I was thinking a 5.5" barrel might be nice and would take care of my constriction.  I mostly shoot 45 colts loads from it and I see no reason to push the upper velocities for 454 so velocity loss from the shorter barrel is no big deal.  I also am good friends with a gunsmith which will do the work for basically nothing.  Is there any reason I should not do this?  Any opinions?  Anyone done this before?  I also have a redhawk 44 mag with a 7.5" barrel so I would still have one revolver with a longer barrel.

My .44 SRH got a barrel bob some years ago to 6". I believe they took it off the muzzle, although it really shouldn't matter. Mine is fine. Much handier. They also took off the billboard on the side of the barrel.

Some Ruger's suffer this problem where the bbl is screwed into the frame.  I had a 44 Taylor Throated at Alpha precision and accuracy went from a 3" gun to about an inch.

Check this fellow out he is in British Columbia, Canada he shortened my SRH to 4.25" and installed his front sight rib that he designed.

http://armco-guns.com/ scroll down a bit then click on "Whats new @ Armco" when that page comes up scroll down again to the 7 and 8 row of pictures to chaeck out the shortened SRH's.

He turned my gun into the best balanced double action power house on the market today.

I then had Bob @ www.mernickleholsters.com make a couple of holsters for me here are some pictures.

Here are a couple of Youtube links of me shooting this gun.

I like them short. The longest handgun i own has a 5.5 inch barrel other then my contendors. You will lose very little shortening the barrel to 5.5 inch and will make it alot more handy of a gun to carry in the woods. Ive had a few 454s over the years and only have one now a 4 5/8s FA. One i got rid of recently and probably shouldnt have was my redhawk alaskan. It made for a handy woods gun but other things i wanted just took precedence over keep it.

Are you shooting that with the factory grips or have you changed them since the pic was taken?

If you look closely at the picture you will see that the grip is a Crimson Trace laser grip LG-344 http://www.crimsontrace.com/Home/Products/Ruger/LG344/tabid/227/Default.aspx that is using the original stock factory side panels.

I had to grind the hump around the top rear screw hole on the opposite side down, the first time I shot it after 20 shots it had bruised my thumb joint so bad that I could hardly move it for a month.

I am shooting it with these grips in the second vid clip for sure can't remember for the first one though I'll have to go back and look.  OK just looked it is hard to tell but yes they are these same grips.  One other note is I didn't have the laser turned on in the first vid and did in the second vid.

Here is a picture of the other side before I ground it and one of me staring down a grizzly... :D
