If you are wanting a real light load look at the new Trail Boss powder, a lot of cowboy shoots use it and it seems to work really
well.
I shoot a 230 gr 45 over 5.8 gr of win 231 pretty mild and fairly accurate in everything I have tried it in so far.

A few years back I loaded up some ball loads in 45lc. I put a small amount of BP in and filled with creme of wheat and topped off with a pure lead 452 ball and taper crimped. It was just an experiment and the results were that the recoil was near nothing, they did smoke, you could almost see the ball head to the target. Surprisingly the crimp held and there was no movement of the ball, but the loads were so light that every few round I shot one would have the primer backed out enough to jam. I suppose that opening the flash hole would have helped. I gave up on that though. I now shoot a 160gr bullet with some powder behind it. I get pretty good results and the recoil is light. The mold I use is available from Lee. I lube/size with a lubersizer and use Goex Pinnacle powder.

Shaner

My pet load for the young-ens was a Vance 250 gr. RNFP over 7 Gr. of unique , it has very little recoil and still has enough punch to hit the target .  ;D

Hello the fire,

If you want to load up a low recoil load for the .45 you might want to get some of the .45 Cowboy Special brass and load them with 165 gr. RNFP.  Adarondiac Jack is the cowboy who came up with the case.  He had Starline make them for him.  They have the same base diameter of the .45 Colt but are shortened to just a little bit shorter than a .45 ACP.

If you want more info, just let me know.

Miss Lillie is recoil sensitive, so when she was shooting .45 Colt, I loaded 5.5 gr of Trail Boss behind 200gr LRNFP. She shot that load until getting her own cowboy guns in .38/.357.

They work good with 45ACP dies, using the 45 Colt shell holder. I guess you could use .45 Colt dies fer resizing but they would be pretty much useless for bullet seating and crimping.

You can find them here: http://www.cowboy45special.com/

I have not used them yet but I saw some bulk bullets for the LC that were 160 grain. I saw them at Sportsmen Warehouse.
shot placement is everything.

I am using Trailboss with 250gr LCRNFP. I tried 5 gr to start. Some thought it too stout, the wife thought it was shooting low. Should I try and increase it?

You can try going either way with it as you are in the middle of the range. On all my Cowboy guns after I decided on a load, I filed my front sights to bring POI up.

I tried 6.0 grains of Tite Group with the 160 grain bullets but I am getting poor ignition and unburned powder. Even some backed out primers. Maybe thats not enough powder to ignite or maybe I need a Magnum primer. I was getting speeds as low as 385 fps with a high of 610 fps. I am trying to taper crimp these loads, Maybe I need to go to the roll crimp. Any ideas?

Try tilting the barrel up before firing each round and then tip it down before firing each round. Some powders are really position sensitive at low cowboy velocities. That's why I went to Trail Boss. Problem went away. ;D

I loaded a few more today and sized them down a little smaller then put a good roll grimp on them. If the storm misses us I will try them tomorrow. I also used the same powder charge and loaded a dozen 255 Hornady LFN to try.
shot placement is everything.

This load works well now. 6.0 grains of Tite Group, 160 grain LRNFP cast bullets (Miester). CCI Large pistol MAGNUM primer. Good strong roll crimp. They are uniform accross the Chronograph and read 850 fps in the 6 inch Ruger but 1101 through the H&R 45 LC Buffalo Classic.

The same charge with a standard LG pistol primer and the 255 Grain Hornady LRNFP yields about 850 as well from the Ruger and 960 from the H&R rifle. I may try the Trail Boss after this powder is gone. Thanks for the reply's. :)
shot placement is everything.
