Graphite powder - good or bad idea?
« on: September 27, 2007, 04:56:57 PM »
Is it a good idea or not to use some graphite powder on the trigger/hammer group?

I have this old Topper shotgun that had a heavy trigger pull so I put some graphite powder down into the
hammer area and up into the trigger area. The pull got much better, from 8+ to about 4 pounds.
Since this worked so well, I did it to one of my Sportsters too. Turns out maybe not so good of an idea.
Trigger pull is so light, the hammer falls but the firing pin doesn't get hit (if I give it a really slow pull
on the trigger). After a bunch of dry firing (with spent shell) it seems to be ok. So off to the range
I go and after about 70 rounds the transfer bar breaks off and falls out!

Did it break because I used the graphite powder? Or did all the dry firing do it? or did it just happen to
break having nothing to do with the graphite? And why did I do that in the first place?

The transfer bar needs a full pull to the rear on the trigger or it won't be up to transfer hammer impact to the firing pin. Read the owner's manual or the FAQs and Help info.
