Stevens .223 loading problems
« on: September 14, 2007, 08:03:22 AM »
How many of you with Stevens .223 are getting them to load reliably?   Mine will load the first cartridge and then usually fail to chamber the second.  I ask my gunsmith about it and he said quite a few of his customers are having this problem but only with the .223.  He said he attempted a couple of fixes but with little success.  He suggested I call Savage and see if they have some sort of factory fix.  Other than this problem the guns shoots very well.  With my .308 I have had no problems at all.

I have 2 Stevens 223's. I did not have a problem with mine because I took it apart and put in a single load tray. There are some others that have reported the same thing you have. I believe there is one guy that solved his problem by bending the lip on the magazine, but I am not sure of that. You need to see what is causing the problem. Is the cartridge not high enough to get picked up by the bolt? Maybe the follower is getting hung up and not pushing it up far enough or the lip of the magazine is not letting it come up far enough. Is it picking up out of the magazine, then getting stuck? If it is, then maybe the case neck is getting caught on the lip of the chamber. I had trouble with one I converted to 221 Fire Ball until I knocked off the lip a little bit, it then feed smoothly. ;)

i did bend the magazine lip on the right side abit. if you push the bolt slowly and the cartridge pops out real soon then just pry the lip toward the centre of the mag. laotto222, i am interested to find out about the single load tray you have . may i ask where you bought it?
every day is a gift. use it well

It is a Score-High Bench Rest Single Shot Follower Savage Short Action 223 Remington Aluminum. It is made by Score High Gunsmithing  (505-292-5532). I bought them at Midway, but I think you can buy them direct too. I am sure you can buy them other places. I have three of them. One for a Remington 700 and two for my Stevens. On a Stevens, you take the action out of the stock drop the tray into the magazine and the put the follower back in and put the action back into the stock. Very easy to do. Like I said I have converted all of my varmint bolt guns to single shots this way. Good Luck to you. ;)
