Casting the chamber?
« on: September 10, 2007, 05:46:52 PM »
Can you make a cast of your chamber to determine the depth of the throat and/or where the rifling starts?  What is the procedure?  Thanks guys.

It's easy, common is to use creosafe (could be mispelled) it is really woods metal with a melting point of about 180 degrees F.  Melts in boiling water.  Push some paper in the barrel and pour the stuff in the chamber.  Push it out and see what you have.  I've used Candle wax, you will need to oil the chamber up some to get it to come out good.  Plug the barrel about 1/2 inch in front of the chamber, pour some in and see what you get.  Larry

Here's a great article on chamber casting, as Larry said, it's easy to work with, I melt it in a glass measuring cup sitting in a pan of boiling water. TOTW has the best price I've seen on it if you can't find it locally, it's reusable too!! ;)
