Gentlemen, I have owned just about all the cartridges mentioned here. I don't believe any have any magic over another. The law of physics is fixed generally. I have enjoyed shooting every firearm that I have owned - even the dogs and heavy kickers. The budget and the expensive. Of the short mags, I was partial to a Remington 700 300 SAUM that I owned a couple years ago just because it was versatile, easy to load, and extremely accurate. A friend now has it as he decided he could not live without it. I currently am downsizing my weapons ready for retirement. My currrent rifle/shotgun battery is a Ruger #1 in 300 WIn Mag, Remington model 7 in .308 with a Shilen barrel. Ruger #1 SS in 22-250, Remington 788 in 223, Ruger 77/22 K Hornet, A few contender/Encore barrels, and of course several 22's, a weatherby orion 12 guage, Benelli Super Black Eagle, Marlin lever action 45/70 & 44 mag, a custom Rem 700 .308 SS. You will notice after all my years of playing with most of the best of the best I have settled on the standard calibers. I have hunted Elk to gound squirrels from east to west. I never had occassion to blame my weapons. I have always been appreciative of the opportunity I have had in the "woods" with friends and family. I have felt blessed to have the opportunity of the variety of weapons/cartridges and the priviledge of owning them for a season here in the good old USA.

Two years ago I bought a winchester 70 featherweight in 25wssm just because I thought the bullet was so cool looking.
It will really be nice to have in my collection now if they discontinue it.

When it first appeared, I thought I just had to have a 25WSSM. I've reconsidered and recovered. If I didn't already have a 25-06 it would be a tough decision which one to buy.

I think the 25WSSM will not be a survivor. The Rem short cartridges aren't either, in my opinion. I like the 300 WSM but its in a crowded caliber already.

I would have bought a 25 WSM, not the WSSM. I really like my 270 and 300 WSM's.........

hope you get it but if you don't find a nice 2506 , ammo cost less and i have yet to see one that won't shoot !

Let's be clear -- I am not a WSSM fan or proponent. When they first came out I thought what's up with this fatso ? - but after a bit of work with them, the 2 small ones the 223 and 243 WSSM clearly outperform the other big boys in their respective arenas. Something about the short fat case with smaller bullets that lets them really perform will less powder to get high fps which translates into increased barrel life. I would love to see a 17 and 20 WSSM.

The original Short Magnum the Remington 600 in .350 Rem Mag did not last long. They quit making the gun in the 60s, and ammo production died in the early 90s. It is ballisticly the twin to the .35 Whelen. The resurgence in the short magnums brought it back for a while, but it was one of the first to die. I own two, while I like them I would not trade a .35 Whelen for one. While they shoot like a Whelen, recoil is much worse. It's down right abusive. Give me the Whelen anyday.

The lamented .350 did not die quite like that. After Remington ceased production of the M600/M660 around 1970, Ruger chambered their M77 for the cartridge in the 70s and 80s. I well remember during the 1970s through the 90s the M600/M660 rifles in .350 were highly prized by Alaskan hunters, and used ones in good condition brought ridiculous prices at both gun shows and in gun shops. Remington brought the cartridge back in the new millenium in the rather odd M673 and then in the M7. Ruger chambered it in their M77 All-Weather until this year. Ammo is currently available from Remington with the same 200-grain CoreLokt bullet loaded in the .35 Whelen. Their Model 7 CDL is currently chambered for the .350.

Of course the .350 Remington Magnum cartridge does not actually have more recoil than the .35 Whelen cartridge. Both have almost the same case capacity, shoot the same bullets at the same velocities - physics tells us the cartridges recoil the same. But chambered in the little 6.5-pound M600 the .350 was/is a terror - I often shot one a hunting partner used and it was not pleasant shot off the bench. But he never han any trouble carrying it around on many hunts, and everything he shot with it died, up to and including a 9.5-foot brownie.

Hmmm the stocking up and the way it's done can make a huge difference in felt recoil, add a poor stock design to light weight and you have a recipe for nasty recoil. Perhaps the LWT 600 could have had a better stock design?

Hey partsman, a rechamber only runs about $150 at a reputable gun shop. Go get your .25WSSM made. Let me give 'er a try when your done.

I am just glad that gun manufacturers are still trying new things!
I have the 270 WSM and I love it. (have lots of brass though).
I have to ask you all though, at what cartridge should the
manufacturers have stopped at. Should they not try new things?
According to many folks, when the 30-06 was necked to .277,
perfection had been achieved! Why develop anything else!
I think lots of choices show that the second amendment is still healthy
and I never met a caliber I didn't like!

Ahhh correct me if I am wrong $:-\$ but was it not the 458 win mag that was the first Short Magnum cartridges!

Nope, you're off by a decade. The Weatherby .270/.257 Magnums are .30-06 length (the unofficial "short magnum" length) and were introduced in the mid-40s. They were commercially available before the .458 was.

(Speer #14 has some rather pointed comments about Winchester's use of the term "short magnum". That term has been used for decades to define '06-length belted cases to differentiate them from the .375 H&H-length cases.)

Ahhh I do not have #14, I have #12 & #13 so will keep my eyes open for speer #14.

As for the Weatherby cartridges well I wouldn't know anything about them as I have no interest in them or anything Weatherby at all.

As long as we have the .30-06 we don't need anything else. Of course some folks just want more than one rifle, and so we have other cartridges for them.

I won't miss any of the short magnums, because I already have a .30-06.

Well guys here is another opinion, notice I said opinion.
I have owned a 25 WSSM in a Featherweight Winny, 22 inch pencil barrel etc. I have owned it since they were first available. I own or have owned 270, 25-06, 7mm-08 etc. There are no magic rounds. They are what they are.
That being said I have been happy with my 25 WSSM and use it almost exclusivley for North Ga whitetails. Using a 100 Grain Partition at about 3150 it will kill anything I need to kill and with the 2.5x8 VXlll it makes a liteweight nimble rifle. What more does one need? But it does not do anything that another round could not do.
Many have complained about the very thick cases. But that is just a quirck of the round. I think Winchesters lack of quality when they made the rifles hurt the round as much as the design, which is sort like an answer with no question.
Anyway just my 2 cents!

It is not quite that simple. Unless it is a single shot the WSSM action is different and made to facilitate the feeding - which you may remember was an initial concern when the WSSM's were released.

For a day or two I wanted a 25 WSSM then I actually saw the cartridge and it's price tag. For some reason (I'm not an engineer) I was turned off. It wasn't my idea of a long range deer cartridge and offered nothing that my trusty 25-06 could not already do. I am not convinced that there is a market for new cartridges that do not offer any advantage over tried and true existing cartridges. Heck, look at shotguns. See any new guages? There is even one less now that the 16 has died.

OK boys, I came into this one a little late.
It took a while to read all the replies.
It is pretty clear that most don't care for the short mags!
That's fine.
I have four of them.
Had five but sold one.
I will be very up front with you.
Just as GB likes REMINGTONS I am a WINCHESTER NUT plane and simple!!!
If WINCHESTER MADE IT, I'd TRY IT.
It had nothing to do with lighter, shorter rifles for me.
It all was about performance.
Just real quick the one I sold was a SUPER SHADOW in 223wssm.
I love WINCHESTERS but it was a DOG.
Could not make that thing shoot. BYE-BYE!
1- model 70 in 300wsm, shoots pretty good but I haven't used it enough to form an honest opinion.
2- model 70 COYOTIE in 243wssm and it shoots great.
Three under a dime at 100 with two cutting each other and one just a touch off, probably due to barrel heat.
3- 1885 HIGH WALL with a 28" barrel that will do three inside of 1.5" at 250 yds with 130BTs.
Don't really use it that much, too nice of a gun for beating around.
4- model 70 featherweight
THIS IS MY WORK HORSE!!!
Five shots cutting just about anytime you want to try.
Three shots under a silver dollar at 300yds with only 3.5" to 4" drop sighted in at 2" high at 100 with 130BTs.
This is the rifle I used to drop the wounded deer, with a neck shot on the last day of the 07-08 season at just a couple yds over 500.
Yes I had a very good rest on a very calm, sunny day.
No I don't make a habit out of taking such long shots, but in this case it was try the shot or lose the deer onto land that we could not gain access to.
Could I do it again? MAYBE?
Maybe not a neck shot.
I know I wouldn't be afraid to try it if I had to.
Could I have made this shot with a standard 270? SURE with the right amount of hold over.
The same with lots of calibers if you know your equipment and have practiced long range a lot.
Which I have and do on a regular basics.
The 270wsm has just that little touch more to give me that extra bit of confidence that I CAN DO THIS that I don't get from many other calibers.
The same goes for my 204 HANDY.
I love a 223 but the 204 takes a lot of the guess work out of it.
The one wsm I won't try is the 25.
To me it offers nothing over the 25-06 so there is no advantage.
I do feel that the 270wsm and the 300wsm will stick around a while.
The others I have my doubts.

Cooper just didn't look right, his hair wasn't blue and he didn't paint his face red, white and black. just had to be something wrong with a guy like that. NOT! I'll admit he was a might aloof upon first meeting him but after getting to know him he was a great man.
