Question on used barrels
« on: August 27, 2007, 11:24:27 AM »
I have seen two 45/70 barrels sell in the classifieds recently for around 150.00. H&R has these listed at 87.00. Both of these used barrels sold quickly. I have seen other barrels sell for more than a new one from H&R. Is there something I am missing? Is there that much additional cost involved in having H&R fit a barrel? I am thinking of having an additional barrel fitted and just looking for the best route to go.

Fitted barrels cost an additional $25 fitting and return shipping plus the cost of shipping a frame to them, lots of members don't want to wait the 3 to 8 weeks for a barrel to be fitted, so they buy em used and fit them their self. Having H&R do the fitting guarantees a good fit, and is worth the wait for many, but not everyone. ;)

I did not know that. I too would rather buy a barrel from another member, I just don't seem to be quick enough :D

A used barrel might save you some $$$ in ammo that you'd use to "break in" the barrel also.  But even a used barrel I would polish the bore with JB Paste or Flitz to make sure it is clean and smooth.

To get the most out of your money when you send a barrel to NEF, is to buy multiple barrels and or stocks.  You are going to pay about the same amount each time you send your receiver in.  The fitting fee is $15 per barrel.  The return shipping fee is $10 per receiver regardless of the number of barrels you purchase.  At least that is the way it appears on the order form.  I'll find out when I get my statement from them.

Plus while the receiver is in there you can get a trigger job if it needs one without additional shipping expense.

D_hiker is right on the fitting and shipping costs, $15 per barrel, $10 shipping per order, whether you order one barrel or eleven as one member did a couple years ago!! :o I just sent a frame in for 2 barrels, sent just the frame, no stock, ordered a TDC stock set, shipping USPS priority was less the $10 with insurance and delivery confirmation, and H&R will have it Thursday most likely. ;D

Yes, You have to figure the options and do what works out.
I sent a Receiver to get the Muzzleloader barrel. I knew it would get a new forearm with the barrel. I also knew I needed a MC stock as I would be adding a scope to the ML barrel. So, I sent just the receiver in a little priority box and ordered a MC stock on the order form and also asked for a trigger job.

One stop shopping I hope.

Good luck!
