I understand that buckshot was designed for use in open chokes.  I have patterned 00 Buckshot out of a fixed IM barrel which patterned close to 30 inches at 45 yards.   I was looking to use it on raccoons, but the pattern was too wide for me.  I am now going to try BBB which I have not patterned, yet.

I don't believe there is a simple single answer to the question. What are you wanting to use it for plays into the picture. Do you want a wide open pattern for up close self defense applications or a tight longer range pattern for use on game when hunting? Makes a big difference in choke choice. The size of buckshot also plays into it.

The only way to properly answer your question is to take the buckshot you plan to use and some choke tubes out and pattern them and see what works best for your particular application. In generall tho IC or MOD is likely to do best for hunting and for close range self defense applications I don't think you can get open enough.
