30/30 case length?
« on: August 21, 2007, 09:28:50 AM »
I need to trim some cases, but I can't find the min. and max case length for a 30/30.  Can you folks help this poor soul?  Thanks. ;D

Speer says 2.0295" is the trim to length, max length is 2.0395". Hodgdon says 2.030" trim length.

Joel,
Gonna shoot it as is for a while? That's a good plan!!

If you need some light recoiling loads for white tails... I load one for my buddies, 10 YR old. So far his dad, ::) has shot two deer with it with excellent results.
Its assembled with the SIERRA 125HP bullet and 2460 powder. It shoots great, I don't remember the velocity, but it shoots right thru deer with nickle to quarter sized exits.

 Good luck,
 CW

Thanks CW.  I shot it this past weekend with Fed. Power Shok 150gr and it pounded the heck out of me.  I'm glad my 9yr old didn't shoot it.  It would've scared him to death!!!!  I have some 110gr Rem soft point I'm going to try out using pistol powder since that's all I have right now.  I'm looking for about 1500fps with it.  We are hunting at bow range anyway so Vel. is not really an issue.  By the way, the darn Topper 158 shot MOA at 100yds.  Not bad for an ugly gun.  Thanks for your help.  Oh, a budding of mine is giving me a 243 bull barrel.  I might give it a try too.  Later.

With out knowing your knowledge of reloading...BECAREFUL WITH PISTOL POWDERS in rifles!!!! If you have experience with this, and know what your doing. PLEASE, no offence meant. Better to be safe than sorry.

This velocity is attainable with one of the SR powders or look in the LYMAN book for the reduced loads. Substituting a lead bullet load for a jacketed one, at these LO velocities is a recipe for disaster..PLEASE be careful.

I've been reading a great deal about the subject of reloading rifle boolits with pistol powders.  I'll be extra careful once I decide what to do on the matter.  No offense taken bro.  Later.

Joel,
I just posted up in your post over in reloading section.

I would be happy to help, these are dangerous waters your in... I would HATE for someone to get hurt.

There are many of us here on GBO with a wealth of knowledge light loading rifle ammo.

Shoot me a PM if you would like some specific help.

I think I'm going to stay away from BE for the 30/30.  I'm starting to feel a bit uneasy about the whole thing.  Thanks for your help.

I like to use the Lee brand trimmer. You have to buy the cutting stud and post 1st. You then simply buy the depth gauge and shell holder for each type of cartridge. They are fast, cheap and stop cutting when it is at the correct length. I put the shell holder in my drill and trim it in a few seconds. I have a set for every cartridge I load for and put the gauge and shell holder in each die box so it never gets lost. I buy my loading supplies from midsouth shooter supply. Hope this helps, George Nickerson, Klawock Alaska.
