ULTRA HUNTER IN 460 S&W ??
« on: August 21, 2007, 05:34:21 AM »
I've been looking at H&R ultra hunters for a while and think id like to try one for my first big game rifle . i used a old Ithaca 12 guage pump with slugs as a kid for deer . id like something with longer range (200-250 yards) and ive always been a fan of big holes . if i had my druthers id like to get a H&R in 460 S&W because i can also shoot 454 and 45s in it . i figgure i could shoot 45s pretty cheaply for pratice , then use the 454s for deer and bump up to 460 for bear or if one of those west va elk should stumble across the state line and also for longer shots at deer . Thompson has a barrel out ( http://www.mlhunter.com/CFReviewTCPHKatahdikn460.htm ) for their guns . i know id have to adjust the scope each time i change caliber on the target range before each hunt . does anyone know if H&R has a 460 barrel available or if one is in the plans for the near future ? i cant afford  investing 600-700 collard in a thompson when a H&R could do the same job for for 1/3 of the price . im thinking of topping it with a bushnell 3200 3x9x50 . if im looking for something that doesnt AND isnt going to happen what would you folks recommend ?

They don't offer the 460 and I doubt they ever will. Get a 45-70, 444 or 450 Marlin and you'll have all you need, the 45-70 with handloaded 300gr loads at around  2400fps will get you to 250yds easy. ;)

When I got my 500 S&W barrel I asked H&R about the possibility of the 460 and was told at that time they had no plans to make a 460 handi.  I don't know if that will ever change, but i think the 500 is pushing the limits with the handi action/barrel lug design.  There have been several 500 barrels experience lug set back with full power loads.  The 460 has a pressure limit 5,000 PSI above the 500 so if H&R is experiencing problems with the 500 I doubt they would attempt the 460 which could be loaded within SAAMI specs another 5,000 psi.

The 500 with full power loads also leads to shoulder set back.... ;D

Just get a 444 and it will match what the 460 will do, you can even use the pointy bullets like the LeverRevolution ammo.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!
