What have I done?
« on: August 14, 2007, 04:17:50 AM »
Last night the wife and boy left me home alone with my guns and tools.(bad idea)
Found a surprise in my garage this morning.

Now my synthetic stock and ultra varmint fore arm are textured sandstone courtesy of Krylon.
Also, my barrel has a hammered silver finish to it thanks to Rustolium.
To top all that off my hammer is shorter and my trigger got lighter.

Now the scary part, I must wait 48 hours for the paint to cure.(plus we have plans tonight :( )
PS
I should have pics by Thursday and maybe shoot her this weekend.

Don't be so hard on her, it's not her fault you painted the gun.  LOL

Couldn't wait. Put "her" together last night.
I think it looks pretty good myself.

PS No, I'm not going to shoot my wife. She would shoot back.

Looks great. I have a similar finish in my barrel. I used a paint made for engine blocks that are highly heat resistant ;)  good luck with yours they are good looking.

You could say it was baked on.We have gone over 100 for weeks.
This morning the temp was 88 at sunrise.
Both Paints performed better than I expected.
The stocks feel much better. Don't have that cold "slimy" feel,
And the barrel looks very durable.

I have actually been planning some sort of paint for this gun for a while.
In the first pic you can see the edge of a pile of different textures and paints I have been testing on scrap wood.

Last weekend I had a can of that sandstone paint in the shopping cart.  Then I took it out.  Now I will go back and pick it up.  It looks very nice.

How does it hold up to handling and bumps, scratches, ect?I have looked at it but doubted it would hold up anywhere near as well as the duracoat i use.

Only time will tell. Should be easy to touch up the stock though.
The eggshell foam in my hard gun case doesn't seem to bother it though.

I like that color, tried a tan Fusion paint on Savage once and it was great.  Only problem was that it wasn't durable.  It wore on the grip then Gunscrubber took all of the joy out of my custom paint job.

I think that if it is going to be a synthetic stock then tan looks best (I do love my wood, though)

I used two coats of a good primer from work and then three coats of the sandstone tan textured.
Shouldn't wear anytime soon.
The only thing I am worried about is chipping.

I saw a beautiful Rem 700 with a similar color stock and stainless barrel for $1200.
This little conversion cost about $15.

Nice! I like it. How does the stock feel against your cheek? I have been planing to paint with the fusion, but now I am re-thinking.

I think I'll like it.
May be a little ruff for higher recoil rounds.
I used black fusion on a brown dashboard and had problems with wear.
Very thin paint.

Looking back at your photo it looks like the sandstone paint is also Rustoleum.  I might also look into putting a clear matte finish over the sandstone.  The reason I put the paint back last weekend was because I wasn't sure how it would feel against my cheek.  I did get a couple of funny looks from other Wal-Mart shoppers as I was holding the can of paint up to my cheek and rubbed it.  I think I will try on a piece of scrap wood to put 2 coats of the sandstone.  And sand the roughness down after each coat dries in the area where my cheek will be.  That way there would only be one layer of the texture where cheek weld would be.  I do like the tan color.

That sounds like a good idea. Please post if you try it. Thanks.

Daaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnngggggggggg

I'm going to have to buy a can of sandstone paint to try it now.........I keep thinking how much I like the spray-on bedliner for cheap stocks.  That sandstone paint looks pretty cool.

Are you talking about a wood stock or plastic? What about spraying the bedliner as the first coat, then using the sandstone as the second?

If it is primed with something that will stick to the synthetic then it should be fine.  The paint is then bonded to the primer not the stock material.  Partsman said he primed with 2 coats of primer then painted so I think he will be fine.

Yes the primer is the key to any paint job.
The one I used is from work.(Case IH Dealer)
We use it to paint tractors with fiberglass hoods metal frames and plastic roofs.
It will stick to anything and is fairly rugged.

Not that it will matter much on this rifle.
I don't take my heavy barrel 223 with the 12x target scope in the brush much.

Thanks for the idea.  Going to do the same with my 30-06 Handi.  Leaving now to go to the hardware store.
