.17 Fireball

It's a 20 gr. bullet traveling 4000fps. (book value). New one on me, how long has it been around. It's a center fire, does anybody know if it will be reloadable? I'm wondering if a Handi will be built for it. That's pushing a piece of copper wire pretty fast.

The .17 Remington Fireball introduced this year derives from the .221 Fireball, developed for Remington's bolt-action XP-100 handgun in 1963. A shortened .222 Remington, the .221 Fireball earned a small but faithful following. The .17 Fireball mimics the .17 Mach IV, with a 1.41-inch case and 30-degree shoulder. It launches a 20-grain AccuTip-V bullet at 4,000 fps with great accuracy.

Actually I haven't paid that much attention to the .17's. I guess I didn't realize the Mach IV was traveling 4000fps. Is any body reloading this round? And what rifles are built for it? It's the possibility of reloading that interests me and if it will be in a Handi.

It's not available in an H&R. There are a couple here that have rechambered .17 call rimfire barrels to .17 Remington and used them on SB2 frames tho.

I don't really understand Remington's logic behind the 17 fireball.  They already have the tried and true 17 remington that launches the same bullet as the fireball 250fps faster.  I guess the only advantage is that the fireball would use a little less powder.  I think they wanted a new sub 22 cal wizz-bang caliber to advertise so they came up with the 17 fireball instead of just resurecting the 17 rem.  If they wanted to compete in the sub-22 market with the 204 ruger they should have just legitimized the 20 tac or something similar.

It is a tamed down 17 Remington, few years ago I rechambered a 17 HMR to 17 Remington, it worked well, but I could never get it to shoot without vertical stringing.  I sold it and bought a Savage 10 and rebarreled it to 17 Remington, it is great.  You could get one of the 17 Handi barrels and do the same thing to 17 Fireball, it would be a great experment, and would not cost a lot to try. I am hot on the trail of a .14 barrel I want to put on a stubbed off Handi barrel, that could be fun.  Larry

I read an article, but I can't remember where (old memory thing again).  Anyway this is offered in the model Remington 700.

From the mags I've read they claim the 17 Fireball doesn't wear out the barrel as fast as the 17 Remington. They also claim you can fire more shots between cleanings. It's an interesting cartridge but I'll stick with my 22-250.

I think alot of the 17hmr fanatics will buy the 17 fireball, I would like to try the caliber out in a cheaper gun preferably a handi ;D

IMHO, just another version of re-inventing the wheel which seems to be the trend these past 10 years.  Another new cartridge that is really nothing different or better.  On a side note, the 270 WSM boasts a 150 Grain bullet at 3000 fps.  Well in all recent (that I have seen) reloading books all that the "old" 270 can do with a 150 grainer is 2850, even though Federal used to sell some that would do 3000 fps.  The only place I can find handloading data for the old 270 is in older manuals.  It's just marketing, more fps, more torque, fewer calories, etc....
