Electronic scales
« on: May 29, 2003, 09:59:21 AM »
I want to buy an electronic scale to weigh powder charges (special circumstances)and cast bullets. I have read reports of poor accuracy with low powder weights, annd non-repeatability. Would you tell me about your experience so I can make up my mind?
Thanks

Have not noticed any of that with mine.  I checked powder weights from 11gr. to 52 gr. against my beam scale when I first got it and the two agree every time.  I have not had any reliability problems with mine.  I use a PACT brand scale.

Joe,

I've been using a RCBS Powder Pro for about 4 years now and have never had a problem. It stays within .1 of my 10-10 consistently. To tell you the truth, I mostly use it for weighing BPCR cast bullets and brass before I segregate them.  I stick to the 10-10 for weighing powder. Nothing against the Powder-Pro, I just like the way the balance beam visually registers small changes.

I've been using a PACT BBKII for about 2 years now. I also bought the adapter so I can plug it into the wall. Haven't had any trouble with it at all, and hope not to go back to a balance beam scale.

I have the Lyman 1000 series - bought it many years ago when digital scales first came out.  It has served me extremely well.  Have their check weight kit and it checks out on the money when calibrated to the master weight they provide.  I also infrequently check it against my RCBS 505 beam scale that was used previous to the digital.  It verifies the Lyman readings.

I've been using the RCBS electronic scale and infrared dispenser combination for some years now with no problems at all. However, the problems you addressed do get mentioned once in a while. As for the repeatability thing, these scales and dispensers do need to be turned on for 20 to 30 minutes before using. If they are not, they can tend to change in aprox. one tenth grain increments as you go along for a while... If you let them warm up for a while, this will not be a problem. Also, they need to be used strictly in the following conditions.
1. An absolutely solid, vibration free bench.
2. Absolutely no hint of any kind of breeze from an outside window, a furnace or air-conditioning vent or fan.
3. Away from any electronic influence such as fluorescent lights, etc.

Actually, my bench is lighted by a fluorescent fixture, but my scale/dispenser is under the door that opens up and holds my mechanical scale, and is thereby protected from the influence of those lights. I have found no sign of problems with small loads either... Dave

I'm not familiar with this. In this combination does the scale given feedback to the measure and cut off flow when the correct charge is reached?

Exactly...  The scale sends feedback to the dispenser, and the dispenser switches to "trickle" mode and stops when the scale tells it to... It works just great. Here is the picture of it...

I took too long to switch over to digital, used two different balance scales over the years (upgraded). about a year ago finally bought the Dillon D-Terminator, all I can say is WOW. Raymond :D
