Raging Bull .454 Opinions
« on: January 27, 2007, 10:04:36 AM »
Just looking for opinions on the quality of the Raging Bull .454 and Taurus in general.  How do they compare to S&W large frame revolvers as far as quality and accuracy? I owned a Titanium Tracker in .41 mag which I am sure many of you prbably know is no joy to shoot.  I did not own it very long but had no complaints other than the recoil but I knew that going in.  I am looking for a deer hunting revolver for next year and I am considering a Super Blackhawk .44 or S&W 629 Classic as well.

I have a RB .454 and have been more than happy with it.  The accuracy is great, and it fits my hands well too.  My hands are fairly large, but I can stilll get a good squeeze on the grip.  I have a titanium .44 that kicks the crap out of my hands, the RB is much more of a pleasuse to shoot.

Taking it out on the range, the movement in the hands and recoil is similar to the Smith x-frames.  You can barely tell the difference between the RB .454 and smith .500, both were compensated.  You could feel the .500 had a little more push, but with the rubber grips, they were both very comfortable.

I enojy shooting the RB with a 6.5" barrel more than my smith 29-2 with a 4" barrel because of the weight and the muzzle break on the RB.  The .44 has more muzzle flip, making it harder on the wrists.  The one thing about the .454 is that the muzzle blast is huge.  Wear ear muffs at all times.  I was out bear hunting, and decided after seeing nothing almost all day to pop off a round at an old bee hive on a branch (I could tell it was old and not in use) and that was a big mistake without hearing protection.

The super blackhawks with longer barrels are good hunting rounds, but still have more muzzle flip.  I like the .454 because you can get some flat shooting high velocity rounds out of the gun.  In the larger caliber handguns, the muzzle brake is fairly key if you are going to be taking it out shooting, makes it much easier on the hands.

All three of your choices are good ones, I would say that between the smith and the ruger, the only decision would be your preference.  If you are going to put some full house .44s through it, go with the ruger.

Between all three, Go with the RB .454, for all the above reasons.  I have had mine for about two years, and have had no problems, and it shoots very well.

Because of a lot of bad reports about Taurus lately I'm slow to respond to this. I have been shooting handguns well over 40 years, and own several custom big bores. Like a kid in a candy store, I like em all. For years it was S&W's, the 19 and 29 being favorite. Ruger 44's took first place for a while because they could handle the heavy loads I liked. Contenders also had a special place, and 1911's, etc. Several years ago I bought a Raging Bull in 454. I loved the 454 round from a Freedom arms 454 I had owned. Thought I would get the Taurus til I could find another Freedom Arms 454. Never looked for the Freedom Arms 454, the Taurus shot that good. I have also bought the Taurus in the Raging Hornet, Bee, Trackers in 17 HMR, 357, 44 mag, 45 ACP, etc. Over a dozen so far, and not a problem with any of them. Most have scopes, and shoot better than some custom guns. The 17 HMR Tracker has had thousands of rounds through it, and never a problem. The last Trackers were 45 ACP and 44 MAG. 3 in 45 ACP and 2 in 44 Mag, bought within the last 18 months. No problems with any of them. One of the 45 ACP's has a 4 X Leupold and has had well over 1500 rounds through it with no problems. This is my problem with them though, the last 2 people I know that have bought a Tracker in 44 Mag have had problems with them. The quality is not the same as the ones I have. I would buy another one in a heart beat if it was as good as my other ones. Would not touch one if it wasn't? In fairness I have had good and bad in S&W and Ruger also over the years. Shouldn't have taken so much space, hope it explains why I like them but, slow to recomend. Good luck.

Redneck...what kind of problems have your friends had with the .44 Trackers? Any specific areas that should be checked prior to buying one?

The first one throws one shot out of five from the same chamber a couple of inches out of the group at 20 yards. It also spits lead from the cylinder gap on that chamber worse than a revolver should. You can put a light at the back of the cylinder and see it is not in line when it locks up with the hammer back. On the other gun, the cylinder star/extractor is being cut by the hand that turns the cylinder. It looks like it has been cut with a file, and after you rotate the cylinder a dozen times by cocking the hammer you can see small metal filings. The gun shoots good groups, and locks up tight, but the hand cutting the star on the extractor is not good. My Tracker in 17HMR has had bricks of ammo run through it and shows no wear. One of my 45 ACP Trackers has well over 1500 rounds through it and shows no wear there. I love Taurus guns, and after shooting a couple of their new 1911's want one, but all the bad press lately bothers me? I'll probably buy one of their 1911's in the next few months, but will go over it good first. Sure wish their quality control people would get it together. I love the guns i have that came from them, and have never had any problems with them. One of the guys that bought the 44 that has the chamber that does not line up bought it because he liked mine. Makes you slow to recomend something after that happens. Just look one over good before you buy.

I myself was thinking about getting a bull in the .500.  I was looking the other day and found the 10" version for 650...   Looks like something good to put a scope on.  I was thinking about getting a scope for my .454, but I like the open sights way too much.

I've owned a bull in .454 for almost a year now.  I love it, is ergonomically pleasing.  It bucks a bit with factory loads.  I load down a bit and find it still accurate and the recoil a lot more tolerable.  I think this is a great gun and I'm happy with my purchase.
It it hurts when you do that then don't do that.

Nice blast.  I was getting some huge ones with an amount of H110 I will not mention and 250 grainers.

I'm thinking of getting a scope for mine... or maybe get a matching one to scope... hmmm... so many decisions to be made.
