NIKON scopes... specifically, Pro Staff
« on: July 27, 2007, 04:00:19 PM »
I am a LEUPOLD scope guy thru and thru....BUT I have run across a "DEAL" that's hard to turn down on a brand new NIKON Pro Staff 4X rim-fire scope.

http://www.nikonsportoptics.com/product.php?group=16&subgroup=10&product=6305

I posted up in the rimfire section as this is for a 22.....

Don't know about the rimfire versions, but I have three Nikon Prostaff scopes, a 2x7 and two 3x9s  Just excellent!

Two guys at work use them on centerfires with no problems but I would think that the eye relief is too short for centerfires.  I have never owned one but I have fondled the display at work quite a bit.  It looks good inside and outside the store.  Hmmm, I should take them all out to the field behind the store and compare them at dusk........

It is very clear.  It isn't Leupold VX-II, but it is better than my Bushnell Legend which I hold in high regard.  My biggest issues with scopes are distortion, clarity and flare.  I would give it as good as VX-II for no distortion and for the quality of its coatings, but it isn't as clear (resolution).

Thanks Blue!! That's what I was looking for.

The scope is not local to me. A friend of a friend has it. So I cannot put my hands on it and no one local has one to see. But the price is right so I think I will take the chance.

I have 4 22's w/scopes. Two have rim-fire Leupold's, so even if this Nikon isn't acceptable, I can swap it to one of the 22's I do not use as much and take the Leupold for the Handi barrel. For what I use it for though it sounds like it will be just fine.

Thanks again for all the comments,

cw..i owned that very scope & a 2x7...i liked them...for the money they sure get the job done..they  only went away because i traded/swapped the rifle's they were sitting on in a package deal...they are superior to a "blister" packaged scope...recently a friend insisted on buying one of those "blister" pack scope's because he was tight on fund's & could get a 3x9 for $60.00 buck's or so...i tried to convince him to spend $100.00 to get the 4-power you have mentioned...well you know how that go's..

I just got off the phone with the guy with the scope.... seems he was mistaken...Its not a 4X rim-fire, but rather a 2X7 Shotgun scope. It also wasn't brand new, it was used one season and had some scratches for use. For the $80 he was looking for so I passed on it.

But it got me thinking... So I went on EBAY and found another one. This one IS brand new and is the same 2X7X32 shotgun scope. I was worried it would have a heavy duplex as my Leupold shotgun scopes do. It doesn't, Parallax is set @ 75 instead of the rim-fires 50yrds. That should still be fine!!
Its on its way, got it for $110 shipped.

Now I just have to wait.......

they must call it a shotgun scope because of the 75 yard parallax...mine was the same as you ordered...for some reason i like the standard reticle of nikon scope's..it thick enough yet not to thick...

You're gonna love that 2x7 Nikon. I have one on my 45-70 Handi and one on a 12ga. They have tons of eye relief,
are bright and clear, and hold zero well.

45/70 FAN,
What height scope rings did you use with that scope/handi combination?
Thanks

CW, I didn't have anything to share concerning the rimfire Prostaff, but I have a 3-9x40($110 new) and the camo 2-7x32 Shotgun($90 new)  Prostaffs, great scopes for the money, I'd have to say they're as good as the Leupy VX-1 as far as clarity and resolution, but have slightly less eye relief. I have the 2-7x on the 500 S&W in low Leupold PRWs with the hammer modified, it hasn't been to the range yet tho, well actually it went to the range Wednesday, but I ddn't get to shoot. :-\

BANG OW, I use Leupold Rifleman Weaver-Style high rings.

Ring Height: .647" (measured from base of ring to bottom of scope tube)

I got the scope a couple days back, but was waiting for the 22 Sportster barrel to mount it on. That barrel came Today, (THANKS lamerabbit) As I was looking at the scope I decided against mounting it on the Handi. I opted to switch a couple scopes around. I put the NIKON on a very accurate long barreled CZ 22. I re-moved the CZ's scope. (a Leupold VXII 3X9 AO compact scope)

Then I re-moved a scope from my M2 (Leupold 2X7 Rim-fire) and replaced it with the one from the CZ:

I got the scope ready and found that I needed to cut another slot for the shorter Leupold Rimfire scope.

All told, it took about 2mins to cut this slot to depth.

Now I NEED to get to the range!!! Maybe this Sunday!!!

CW

Finally I got the 2X7 RIMFIRE Leupold mounted up on the new to me 22LR handi.
