« on: July 28, 2007, 02:51:42 PM »
Can anyone tell me what kind of factory ammo there Handy prefers? Or what they have had the best luck with as far as accuracy in there .223. Maybe a stupid question but it might save me alot of time on the range just curious. thank you

Welcome to GBO! If you stick with 40gr to 55gr ammo, you should find one that shoots good, some of those that are popular and still available, is the Ultramax reman 40gr Nosler BT, some of the American Eagle 55gr, Black Hills 52gr match HP, Remington UMC bulk ammo shoots good in some. The gold standard for factory ammo for the 223 H&R is the Winchester whitebox 45gr JHP, but it's hard to find if you can find it at all. :'(

Bang for my buck right now is the ultramx 50 gr nosler bt.  WWB just isn't anywhere to be found.  I have had pretty good luck with everything but the UMC listed above. The Ultramax seems to be the best result in the gun and on my pocket.  There is a whole lot of info on this ammo on the sight if you just search it, but it will all say basically the same thing.

Thank you very much. I tried  some UMC  yesterday and was very disappointed I'm going to the local gun shop today to pickup something different and thought I would gather a few opinions before I go. Thanks for the info

My .223 Handi contoured barrel has always shot as well with Federal American Eagle 50 gr flat base hollow points as it does with the Win. white box. That's a good thing because the Federals are still available.  I see them at Gander Mountain, Bass Pro and some local outfits, but not always!  They are becoming scarce, as well.  Groups size is typically in the 1" range at 100 yards.  Sometimes I can get less and sometimes its more.  It depends on me.

My Ultra .223 shoots the Winchesters best of any factory loads I've tested (which isn't very many).  The Federals don't shoot as well as in the Handi.   I've been saving the White box stuff for the Ultra and using the Federals in the Handi.

Bull111...what is your intended target ?? to me it make's a difference..because if a certain ammo shoot's well... there's also a good chance that it may not work well for it's intended purpose...then it will not really matter...so let's say your shooting prairie dog's & a soft point bullet shoot's well...it may not provide the dramatic result's you might be hoping for...or vise/versa...if a 40 grain v-max shoot's well for you it may not be the best round for predator hunting...if a guy had to give up some accuracy to shoot whatever work's best for it's intended purpose..that is the way to go...of course that's my opinion !!!

bull...my standard reply to predator hunter's...especially to those that don't reload...is to use 55 grain soft point bullet's...yes i'm not alway's popular in my thinking...s.p's are not sexy..."however" they are effective for coyote's...trust me...
