model 1100 question
« on: July 19, 2007, 10:45:36 AM »
I have just bought an older 1100 2 3/4 inch gun. Can I put a 3 inch barrel on it to use heavy loads for hunting? Is the only difference between the 2 3/4 and the three inch the gas ports in the barrel?

Surely you don't mean you are going to shoot 3" magnums out of a gun designed for 2 3/4" shells?
You have a good chance of royally screwing up the mechanism with too much gas pressure.

Really the only difference was the volume of gas bled off at the gas port determined by hole size/number in the barrels. I'm NOT sure tho that the opening in the receiver is the same. IF the fired 3" shell will eject OK and if you have a 3" barrel installed it's not otherwise gonna do any harm to the gun. You'd want to do two things before spending money on the 3" barrel. First check the length of the opening in the receiver to be sure it's the same as on a magnum receiver so the fired 3" shells will eject. I think it is not but am not sure. Then check to be sure the barrel will mate up to the frame.

If both checks are positive then it should work fine it seems to me.

Or just call the tech folks at Remington and ask. They will set you straight.

Thanks for the info. I talked to a local gunsmith and he thinks the receivers are the same, the difference is the 3 inch barrel has only one port to limit the pressure. This is why the 3 inch barrel will not cycle light 2 3/4 shells. Also when I see replacement barrels in catalogs the way it reads to  me the 3 inch barrels will fit both magnum and none magnum receivers. I have put a 3 inch shell in the mag and manually cycled it and it chambered it and extracted it no problem but a fired hull will be longer so this might be a problem. I guess the best thing to do is like you say and contact remington.

The receivers are the same on a non magnum and magnum 1100, and a magnum barrel will fit on a non magnum receiver. The non magnum gun is also able to eject 3 inch fired shells. I have a non magnum 1100 of 1974 vintage. Last year I purchased a Remington steel shot barrel, which is a 3 inch magnum barrel. Remington recommends using any steel, or other non toxic shot 3 inch shells in a nonmagnum gun , but not lead 3 inch shells. I called Remington tech support on this, and was told by them that a non magnum 1100 internals are a little different than a magnums, and 3 inch lead shotshells shoot at higher pressure than 3 inch steel or non toxic shot, and will eventaully damage the action of the non magnum 1100.
