Survivor or Ultra????
« on: July 26, 2007, 03:45:00 AM »
I am thinking of getting a Survivor (SB2-623) or Ultra Varmint (SB2-F23), composite skeletonized stock/fluted barrel in .223.
Does anyone have any experience with either of these? Accuracy?? Availablity?? Who's got them for sale???Cheapest (best price)??
Thanks.

My preference is the Ultra's..I don't like the Survivors stock at all...Others do though...but..I don't..In 223...the recoil won't really matter none...but...add larger calibers to it...and your going to need a good recoil pad...and the Survivor doesn't have one..and to me looks goofy with any added to it...besides...the Ulta Varmint looks way cooler the way it is anyway and gives you the accessory rail to add a bi-pod on and move it around  ;)..

The ultra can be shortened to fit better. Its a little heavier as well. I liked the ultra on a bench but didnt like carring it in the woods.
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

I have both and like both. I think they both shoot better that I do. :)

Survivor - lighter, shorter, storage in stock.
Ultra - stronger feel, bi-pod rail, fluted barrel.

Overall, I like the Ultra better. But, not by much.

Walmart still has the best price I've seen on any H&R, but supposedly Gander Mt will match their prices. RR sells em for very reasonable prices too.

Tim

Tim, have you ever had a problem with your local Walmart stores (that still sell firearms) not honoring the "online catalog" price?

Bill,

I've only bought one from them, got it for the same price as listed on their web site. I don't see how they could charge anything different, they enter the product UPC to sell it. But none of the Walmarts here in Vancouver sell firearms any more, so I'll never know!! PM Bluebayou if he doesn't respond to your post, he's a Walmart manager. ;)

I choose the Survivor when I was looking at both of them.

With the $70 you save you can buy a nice slip-on recoil pad and still have $50 to put toward a scope.

As for shooting heavier recoil loads, with the Survivor, you can fill the storage area with BB's or lead shot.  I did this when I was shooting 30-06 from a bench.  Made the gun total around 10 pounds.  After the bench shooting was done, I just dumped them back into a container and took the rifle hunting.  Best of both worlds.

Check out Budsgunshop.com.  They are located in Paris, Kentucky and usually have killer prices on everything they have.  They have one area of the site that is strictly internet sales.

As far as the look of the guns, I love what I have seen in "Let's See Some Handi's" on this website.  I love the look of the Survivor .308 heavy barrel in some laminated stocks.  I saw one on that thread and wish I'd had a chance to buy it. I bought a .308 Ultra some time back and a friend of mine liked it so well, he wouldn't leave me alone until I sold it to him.  I believe I parted with it as easily as I did  because I really wanted the heavy barrel and I will buy one before too long and make it a project gun.

The new 2007 Special Order Catalog does not list prices.  With the last 2 rifles that I have ordered for customers, I had to look up the price in the computer.  The 243 HB that I ordered the other day was $227, which is the same as the online listing.  Our firearms section on the website is........weak.  I would strongly advise following the procedure of:

going to the store
getting someone to call Sports South to verify onhand
order the rifle at Jewelry (new change because of no layaway)

I will look at some of the prices at work on Sunday, but everyone should know that Walmart.com and Walmart are two different companies at some level.

We don't have the same prices within the same city and state sometimes, let alone in different parts of the country.  Sometimes there are different costs when purchased.  Some stores are "competitive stores" with Targets or Best Buys closeby.  Some stores are not.  Some stores are near a Distribution Center, some are not.  The further away you are then the more you pay a premium for the cost of shipping.

In Oklahoma we cannot sell below cost on some items.  Sometimes the customers from Texas (15 minutes away) are mad because we don't match the prices of the ad that they got in their mail box (but their "local" store would of course since it is "their" ad).

Personally, since the rifle isn't sold online, I don't think that we should list a price.  It should just read "not sold online, see store for pricing".  That being said, I would definately honor the .com price because it would be professional on my part.  Does the next guy HAVE to?  No.

All my three Ultras 25-06 and two 223's where bought at Russel Sports in Calgary. Its been a little while but I think they are still available?

I have not been looking for or buying any H&R products so I can't really tell.
You want me to find out? What caliber?

Putting the finishing touches on the #1 7x57 and building a sea kayak has
kept me a bit out of touch.

Had to go out to buy some sanding disk at the House of Tools they are right long side of Russels. They had an Ultra 22-250 with the chocate stock. That
rifle was well put together with a tight lock up, as good as I have seen.

They told me they can order in any Ultra from the distributer if they have them? Best I can do. Man I was tempted to buy a Huglo 20g SXS except for the plain stock wood it was very well put together for $1100 no ejectors.
single selective trigger and screw in chokes.

Hi Fred:

I guess you are all healed up now(I hope) so just how are you doin'?

I am contemplating an addition to my gun collection but don't know what I want. All I know is I seem to be short one rifle. I have had this feeling allot lately. I like the Handi  factory thumb-hole stock allot and I was thinking of a 7mm08 or a 260 like my son now has. Also I have been thinking of some Cowboy action---45-70, maybe a Marlin CB with a period external mount scope(Malcolm or such)  or a Handi BC or maybe just a 1895.

Keep well!!
