Stock work
« on: June 12, 2007, 02:00:24 AM »
Who here does their own stock work?  It doesn't matter if it is started from a semi-finished stock provided by 'someone' or if you went out and cut down the tree that now adorns your custom rifle.

I will finish, refinish, and sometimes re-contour a stock and always wind up bedding my stocks, but who does what with the wood that graces their hunting arms???  Mikey.

What I've found, that I really like doing, is to shop around for a "restocked" or "custom stocked" rifle that someone has butchered - preferably by leaving too much wood/meat on it - which means it's usually fairly cheap, for whatever it is.

The extra wood allows restyling to proper classic proportions, fairly easily - followed by some creative staining (if needed, to "create" fancy grain) and a hand-rubbed TruOil finish.

I've had several, over the years, that I've been able to more than double my investment on - with just a little labor.

Virtually every previous seller, that I've shown the gun to after I was done, had the same reaction: "Is  that the same gun, I sold you ?"

I used to.

I built muzzleloaders for about two decades.  Then I took a job that has me traveling a lot and don't have the time.

I still make the time to shape revolver grips though, if that counts.

I also did a couple of cartridge guns.  One from a Fajen or Bishop stock.  One from a chunk of walnut.

Mostly I whittled muzzleoaders.
