Concealed Carry in Minnesota questions?
« on: June 09, 2007, 06:17:21 AM »
How hard is it to get a permit for concealed carry in Minnesota????
I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on; I don't do these things to other people and I require the same from them.

First off, the more proper way to put it is "Permit to Carry" - In Minnesota, you can carry both concealed and open.  Some states, you can only carry concealed.

Are you a felon?  No?  Well, then getting a permit is easy  ;D

First, you need to take a Permit to Carry class by a certified instructor.  There are many instructors all over the state.  The class runs $150-200.  After completion of the course (which is usually on a Saturday or Sunday for 8 hours and then some shooting at a range), you will receive a certificate of completion from the instructor.

Now the course is done and you have your certificate.  Head to your local Sheriff's Office and submit an application for the permit.  They have within (30) days to either issue you the permit or deny your request.  They cannot deny your request unless you have been convicted of a felony or are restricted from owning firearms.  Minnesota is a "Shall Issue" state, meaning they will issue the permit to anyone who can carry it legally.  Some states are "Will Issue", in which case, if they deem it unnecessary for you to carry a pistol, they will deny your request.

So... How hard is it?  It isn't.  Just get in contact with a Permit to Carry Instructor, take the 8 hour course, and within 30 days, you will be packin'  ;)  Get yourself a Glock (I'm biased), and a good Inside the Waistband Holster.

More information here:  http://www.dps.state.mn.us/bca/CJIS/Documents/CarryPermit/PermittoCarry.html

If you are in the Metro area, one of the best instructors in the twin cities is Joel Rosenberg.  He wrote the book on carrying in Minnesota.  His site can be viewed here, and it also includes upcoming courses:  http://twincitiescarry.com

Let me know if this is helpful, and if you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them for you.

------

So after typing all of that, I realize you are from Missouri.  I am not as educated on non-resident carry, you're best to contact Joel at 612-501-8229 and he'd be happy to answer all of your questions pertaining to non-resident application and issuance.

Hey thanks for the help! I went to packing.org but I didn't notice that MN was Shall Issue.

It's been that way for maybe 4 or 5 years? I never bothered to get a carry permit yet. I've carried handguns deer hunting and by the 3rd day they are laying back in the cabin. Can't imagine carrying one jammed in even tighter to conceal it.

I stay away from those parts of the metro St Paul/Mpls with known thugs. But I suppose it's just a matter of time I'll be in the wrong spot.

HuntingGuy follow me around with your Glock will you. There's no pay in it but you can eye ball the woman all you want   ;)

Where does a guy shove this chunk of steel down the waistband?

Actually if I did carry this would be my choice of weapon and position, in the open for the bad guy to see...but then I would be constantly hassled to see the permit. Don't see many carry in the open up here.

Colt 10mm Delta Gold Cup with handloads using Hornady 200gr, and max powder. (10mm is a legal big game round in MN)

The threat is not just in ghetto areas of St. Paul or Minneapolis, it's everywhere.  I've not only seen murders & robberies in St. Paul and Minneapolis, but in Woodbury, Oakdale, Maplewood, Newport, Roseville, and many other suburbs.  Just because you may be in a nice area, it doesn't rule out vicious crime.  I respect your decision not to carry, but don't exactly agree with the reasoning given (Not that you need a reason  ;)).  Also, you know as well as I do that there are dozens of light weight and concealable pistols that would do the job as well as the 10mm. It's only a matter of time until those rights are taken away - the permit is good for 5 years, might as well pick one up so you have it if you decide that you want to carry in the next 5 years.  Whether the same permit to carry law stands in Minnesota is mostly dependent on who is in the Governor's mansion.
