Porkers on the loose
« on: May 15, 2007, 05:20:31 AM »
We hear a lot about wild pigs in our neck of the woods but before last week I personally had not seen any.  Last Monday about half way down HWY 32 between the HWY 21 turn off and the town of Bixby there were about a half dozen of what I assume were wild pigs along the road.  They were not particularly large and all of them were spotted.  The light parts of their coloring seemed to be a little darker then that found on farmyard pigs.  These were of the size that would have looked good with an apple in their mouths.  The State Dept. of Conservation has more or less declared war on them but I feel that the chance of eradicating the porkers is probably slim.

I know exactly where you were talking about, If its an unfenced area they are legal. I too have chased them hard but never saw one. I saw a picture of 10 in the back of a pick up,last Sat. said to be shot but my connections tell me they were trapped.  I've found traps, very nice ones (conservation dept. ?) in areas I hunt around  council bluffs lake. So I just gave up trying to shoot one. I can't be there all the time. I do know some guys that have shot some. They cruise the  conservation trails or hy 32  With spot lights at 1 in the morning to daylight. One guy drives one guy stands in the back of the pickup and another shoots.
I have baited many spots and the hogs hit it, then I find a trap in there a few days later. I grew up in that area and most folks won't tell you anything. They WANT the hogs so they have something top hunt. There never has been enough deer to make it worthwhile, at least not in that part of Iron Co.
