Looks good.

Back in the early 70's I had Shaw rework a Siamese Mauser for me.

45-70 with a 26 inch barrel.  I bedded it in a Fajen ( or Bishop) stock and mounted a low power scope on it.  Turned out to be a nice shooter but heavy.

Finally replace the scope with a set of good sights and thought I had a great gun.

It seemed to enjoy the 330 HP from Hornandy and little else.

Wish I still had it.

Where did you find a Siamese Action?

Iti s getting a 25 inch stainless barrel.(.700") at the muzzle. I thought it might look good in a pepper laminate stock from Richards Microfit or a good black synthetic.

Hi Aardvark,

I just bought two of these (it took a National advertisement to find them though)

One has a nice shiny bore and I am keeping it for Military Rifle Competition. I've got 100 cases made from .45-70 cases and just need a custom mould to finish that job.

The second one has a dark bore and I am going to make a switch barrel .35 Greevy Express and .45-70. I hadn't decided on a finish until I saw your post. Did you finish the action yourself? If so, do you have any tips? Have you thought about bending the bolt handle?

Good work.

Snow.

I do not have the necessary jig for bolt handle bending or a hot enough torch...Eventually I probably will do that though...as far as the recipe for parkering goes, I made a post somewhere on this forum...I will go find it and bring it here.
OK--Here it is:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is my recipe:
I have had some interest in the Ruger I parkerized lately so I will put my recipe here for the solution.
Items needed:
1.Stainless pan--(restaurant supply)
2.Phoshoric acid rust treatment (Ospho)
3.Zinc dioxide or Manganese dioxide
4.Steel wool
5.Heat source (stove top or hot plate)
6.Candy thermometer (restaurant supply)
7.Coat hanger wire or similar
Mix in a gallon jug 0ne pint of Ospho and fill the rest with distilled water.(about 15%).Pour solution into pan and heat to about 190 degrees,(do not boil!).
As the water gets hot mix in about 1.5 OZ. of whichever dioxide powder and stir around well.
Get about 1/2 of a clean unused steel wool pad and pull it apart and put it in the solution and let it start to dissolve.
Whatever parts you want parkerized must be clean of all blue and oil or grease.Don't touch the clean metal with your fingers as this will leave a trace of oil and the finish won't take.
Suspend the parts with wire into the heated solution until submerged but not touching the bottom of the pan.
At this point you will see a fizzing action coming off the parts...Leave them in the solution till it quits fizzing,(around 20 min.)..Remove from the solution and put into an oil bath or thoroughly spray them with oil and hang or other means to air dry.
Wipe the parts down and keep them oiled.
Most of the products are available in your area though you can go to this website to get the zinc dioxide or manganese dioxide:

Here is a pic of the Ruger done with the Manganese solution:

And here is a couple of rifles I did:

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g296/InspectorYeats/Mauser/2-1.jpg

NOTE:  The zinc oxide will give a lighter gray finish and the manganese dioxide will be a darker, mear black color...Color will vary from firearm to firearm dependent on metal hardness and composition.

Fantastic, well explained, thanks. Even better that it is easier than hot water bluing. Do you plug or grease the bore when doing barrels?

I was looking at the Brownells catalog and noticed that they have a screw in bolt handle for 98's. It comes with the drill and tap. It might be better for me, since I've only read about the process and I worry about de-tempering the bolt if I use our oxy set.

I did not use a plug on the Ruger pistol and it got in the barrel and the cylinder holes...It never caused a problem and shot out of the barrel after a few rounds fired...I would definitely plug the chamber and bore of rifles..I did plug mine with corks obtained at a local hardware store..Rubber expandable plugs are also available.
Do not use grease as it will contaminate the mixture and would cause problems adhering to the metal.
