Stainless or Steel barrel?
« on: May 30, 2007, 01:01:51 PM »
From the experienced Handi owners that have had both stainless barrels & steel barrels in the same calipers. Which one seems to be more accurate (better groupings)? Or was there no difference at all?

I've only got one SS H&R in 30-06, I can't say it's any less accurate than the 4140 barrels which I know are very accurate cuz I've shot em a lot. They were both made by H&R, but that may change since Marlin is making all barrels except the 32" BC barrel now, time will tell. If my .444 is any indication of the quality of the barrels to come from Marlin, we have a lot to be happy about!! :D

Hi Quick:

Are you sure the Handi barrels are 4140 and not carbon steel?

Good to know for sure. Please confirm

Thanks

No, I'm not 100% positive, may never know for sure. :-\ It could be my memory is merging facts too!! I know the Spanish made Bergara barrels for the CVA Optima Elite are 4140, but I'll do a little inquiring to see if I can find out for sure.

No high pressure smokeless cartridge barrels are made in anything weaker then 4140 steel. Many muzzleloader barrels are/were made from low carbon steel until the 150 gr charges became the norm requirement. That is why TC forbade and may still forbid tapping the side lock barrels for scope mounts. The 1000 series steel would split in the tapped areas where the BP pressure is highest.

The Bergara Stainless barrels are made from 416R stainless...only the blued ones are 4140..

Ok, I found out that H&R blued barrels are 4140 on centerfire and 1137 on rimfire. Stainless is 400
series with magnetic qualities.

Your right Tim...When Marlin was making bolt guns...they did a real good job on their barrels...While a-lot of folks didn't like them for one reason or another..I did...and they shot great for me..So...I think they have a good line on what to do with the Handi's if & when they really get going with them...and will put forth the effort for QC for everyone.

With the rim fire barrels being 1137 steel...I don't know that I would be converting them to any high pressure round...I may be wrong..but..

Remington advertises their rifles as carbon steel not Cr-Mo(4140 or low-alloy same thing) and I have to believe if they were Cr-Mo they would make a point of it as it stands up to throat erosion effects allot better than plain CS. And I'll say it again Cr-Mo is not considered weldable for pressure vessels as it cracks because of high equivalent carbon content. But then again so does 400 series stainless. I really wonder about the strength of any such welds.

Mc,

Ya just need to know what yer doing to weld alloy steels, welding will work fine if done right, obviously it can be done since H&R, Bergara and TC all weld the underlug to their barrels!! ;)

Tim,

They said the rimfire barrels are 1137?? I might have to rethink my plans for the .17 Remington I was going to do now.......

I'm not 100% sure the 17hmr barrel is 1137, it may very well be 4140 since Green Mountain does make 4140 .17 cal barrels and H&R has sourced barrels from them before. Larry (trotterlg) called about the 17 rimfire barrels and was told they're the same material as the centerfire barrels......but that wouldn't be the first time we've been misinformed by CS, and also possibly why he never got it to shoot good if it is 1137. I got my info from a very reliable but anonymous source, so I have no doubt it's accurate, just maybe not all inclusive.
