Questions about 45/410 choke tube
« on: May 23, 2007, 09:48:07 AM »

Since the 45 lc has a larger diameter than a 410 shotshell,  how can one fire a 45 cal bullet down a  barrel with a 410 choke tube installed.  This looks like a disaster waiting to happen.  Do you have to remove the choke tube before firing the 45s? Or what?

I read an article on that before.  I'll try to locate.  What it came down to was removing the choke to fire 45LC, and I remember the article saying about the threads getting dirty.  I think it was an article on the JUDGE by Taurus.  NEF makes a barrel that is 410/45lc and they said the choke must be removed to fire 45lc.  I'm not sure how damaging it would be to fire without removing, but I would suspect more detrimental to accuracy.  That slug will be moving pretty fast by the time it gets to the restriction.  I'm betting it would come out ok.

you do have to remove the choke tube before firing 45 LC in the barrel.  The choke tube serves to arrest the spin on the shot and wad.  Major pressure spike can happen when solid bullet is fired through the choke.

spinafish is correct, you must remove choke tube to shoot .45 Colt, and you shoot 410 shells with choke installed.  I shoot birds with my .45/410 barrel with 410 shells a lot, and I always make sure the choke is installed. But I make even more sure that the choke is out if shooting the .45!

For safety's sake remove the choke for 45lc.  But I still would think the gases would have expanded enough down the barrel to not blow up a barrel.  This would be a good question for Mr. Ohler.

And the Lawyers would be salivating if a gun manufacturer would put such an easily forgotten exploding feature on a gun. I wonder how many people see the Judge as a good snake gun but just in case might put 45lc last two cylinder chambers for heavy defense.  My _od, we can't even have 5lb triggers from Ruger because of the darned lawyers. ??? >:(

I just got one of Taurus' 6 1/2" Judge,  and was wanting to install a choke into the barrel.  But decided that there would be problems shooting the 45s.  Perhaps I could remove about three inches of riflings and then machine a choke tube large enough  for the 45 bullets to go  through.  That way you could shoot both safely.  I like the idea of having a couple rounds of 45s for the last two rounds in the cylinder.....  Do you think this will work?

It seems I mis-spoke,  I thought the Judge had a screw in choke.   :-\  I'm still looking for the article.
