? for you Hornet shooters using Lil Gun
« on: May 15, 2007, 09:59:34 AM »
I have had great results with Lil Gun in my Hornets and Fireballs when I was talking to a bullet maker the other day I asked him why no Lil Gun load data he said he wont use it because it is so dirty be said it builds a hard crust up on the barrel. Have any of you noticed this? Normally I clean with the following routine: 2 patches wetted with shooters choice wait 10 minutes, 10 strokes with a brass brush, dry patches untill clean, than I fill the barrel with wipeout and let sit for a couple of hours to overnight dry patches until white. this time I repeated the whole process 3 times except wipeout and all 3 times after brushing my patches came out as black as the first time. This makes me wonder if there is anything to the theory that Lil Gun is dirty. please let me know what you guys find. I usually clean my gune every trip 10 to 50 shots.

Me, neither, 10 shot groups are under an inch with a max load and the 35gr Vmax, that's after 40 shots without cleaning, I load 50 rounds at a time and shoot em all on each range visit. It's all I've used in my 500S&W, never noticed an issue with it after 2 range trips 30+ rounds each. I like it so much, I loaded  for the 45 Colt with it too, will find out tomorrow how it does.

I've shot quite a few rounds out of my handi hornet using lilGun and it doesn't seem to be any dirtier than any other powder I have shot.

First time I have read such a "theory".

That has not been the case with my use of Lil Gun.  I think the Hornady factory load also uses Lil Gun btw.

I seldom deep clean my handi hornet with solvents, brush, etc.  I just use a dry bore snake to keep it in the groove, then deep clean if it's going up for the season.  Never had copper fouling either and I have used a couple of the best copper products made to check.

Put 35 rounds down the pipe this last weekend in my .357 Handi: 14.5 grains Lil Gun under the 180 grain Hornady XTP. Bore was pretty darn clean, no dirtier than after using any other powder. Hoping to try it again this weekend.

I certainly have no complaints after today's range trip shooting the 45 Colt Carbine with lil'gun, a max load got got me 1917fps with the 250gr Gold Dot HP, can't ask for better than that with accuracy ta boot!!! ;D
