Remington 581
« on: May 16, 2007, 02:43:30 PM »
I'm usually on the H&R board here, but today I dropped in the local pawn shop and just couldn't resist bringing this guy home.  For a rifle that has been used it is as close to perfect as they get, no bad blue, no scratches, it has a wide trigger and a satin finish on the stock.  I have a 582 that I am doing a Hornet conversion on, and it is not near as nice a rifle as this one is.  Did they make different quality lines of these things?  Paid $150.00 plus tax.  Larry

A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

The 581's were made on the same lines as the 788, 540X, 541S. All of them were/are good shooters. I have the same gun as you. I restocked mine, glassed it and took the trigger apart and stoned every surface I could get to including the pinholes. I put in a softer trigger return spring also. Mine likes Eley 10X and will put 10 of them into .490" @ 50yds. Those 500 series guns are keepers for sure. The stock on mine was a mess when I bought it so that's why I replaced it.
