Remington "J" Lock
« on: April 19, 2007, 01:47:17 PM »
Does anyone know if the J-Lock on the newer Remingtons affects the lock time?  What are the cons to the J-lock?

I dont know specifically if the J-Lock affects lock time when in the open position, but I do know it has more to do with the firing pin release than anything else.  I suppose a J-Lock could affect lock time if it is not completely open or unlocked.

I hear the Politically Correct J-Lock feature has been discontinued.  I plan on eliminating it from the rifles that I own that came with one.  It is just one more thing that can go wrong at the most inopportune time.  Any gunsmith can take that out of there and replace that J button with another piece of steel that has no affect on the firing pin.

Zach, what did you buy with a J-Lock on it?

I have some Remingtons with it,although I forget what cartridges.  I was toying with the idea of getting a BDL Deluxe in .223.

Just order a new shroud and firing pin assembly from Brownells before you go hunting somewhere and forget the damn key.  Best $50 you'll spend.

Since I have no children at home, I put the lock in open (if that's the right term) and forget about it.  Oh, I put one of the key thingies on my car key ring.  I haven't a way to measure lock time but I have rifles with and without the lock and can't tell a difference in accuracy.  I've won factory matches with a 7-08 with the J lock.

I guess doing away with the J-Lock feature will negate any factory warranty from Remington, just like Marlin did to those who replaced the Cross-Bolt Safety on the Lever Actions.

I think the J-Lock is UGLY and is nothing more than a hindrance.  It has little, if anything, to do with safety and more to do with inconvenience.  IMO.

If you need a J-Lock to keep people safe around a rifle, you have more problems than a J-Lock can solve.

Here's a link to where I asked a J-Lock question and was quite enlightened by the responses.

Ah yes, the Rem Bashers were in full voice.  It seems the more trifling the subject the louder they are.

I own a Remington rifle and shotgun.  My son also owns a Remington rifle and shotgun.  None of which have a j-locks.

Neither he nor I would buy a new Remington with the j-lock!

I have a SenderoSF 338RUM that has the J-lock and I unlocked it at the gun shop and it hasn't been re-locked since and I don't even think about it being there.  I don't see the need for it but also don't see how this thing could cause so much fuss.
