Question for Tim
« on: May 16, 2007, 02:39:48 PM »
Tim,
This problem has me a little baffled. I am  sure it is something maybe somewhat simple. Here is the problem. I have a 308 I had to shim because of side to side play. It is now tight. Also, I smoked latch and checked it,  it is ok. Here is problem, I shot some reloads and factory ammo and had misfires with both. I thought it was at first reloads maybe bad primers , not so. I looked at another receiver and checked the distance that the firing pin came through the hole, it is quite a bit more than the one on this receiver that is on 308, this receiver is almost new. I can manually push  firing pin out farther but it does not seem to come out as far as it should when bar in pushed on it.
Any ideas Tim.
Jerry

Hows the headspace? Is a round flush with the chamber mouth or recessed slightly? If there's too much recess in combination with a weak pin strike and any barrel/frame gap, no fires will result. You can remove a little off the hammer where it hits the frame which will allow the hammer to strike the firing pin with a bit more impact and push the pin deeper. As it is, it stops against the frame. If the transfer bar isn't working properly, or you don't pull the trigger all the way to the rear each time, it may also limit the pin stroke. You may also have a short firing pin, they aren't expensive, you could order a new one from H&R or Brownell's as an option.

Hope this helps,

Tim

Tim,
I think you may have solved the problem, I took barrel off of receiver and pushed a round into barrel. I noticed that the base of the shell is noticeably pushed into it, recessed quite a bit , I guess I will have to take some off  the end of barrel at the bore and re-shim. Do you think this will fix it?

That will make a big difference, I've had to flat file the chamber face on several barrels to get them to fit right with no excess headspace, some of em looked like they were cut off with a sawz-all!! ::)

Happy barrel fitting!! ;)
