New PSE CrossBow - Ready to build arrows
« on: May 25, 2007, 08:08:09 AM »
Well there is a New PSE Viper Rattler on it's way to my house.  I'd been watching the Horton's on eBay for weeks, then saw this one for $ 205 with shipping and went for it.  Comes with the red dot scope & everything except arrows.

Happen to have several 2219 & 2216 arrows laying around and I'm thinking a may as well cut some down & use them.

Are the half moon nocks all that are used anymore?  And where do you get them?  I guess they are all designed to be pressed into the shaft rather than glued on like other regular nocks?

I assume the procedure will be to cut off the back of the arrow (so there is a hole for the moon nock to go in), then cut arrow to length, install nock & insert/head and it is good to go?  Fletching is still good on my shafts.

Also, I think the PSE calls for a 17" bolts.  I imagine a little longer is OK, or should I just stick with 17" since I'm cutting them anyway?  Thanks.

1/2 moon and flat nocks are used now days. I do know tenpoint  and  Excalibur used the flat nocks.

As to making arrows you will have to cut  the tapered end off the arrow so the nock will slip in. What have done is measure from the insert to for me 20" point and cut that way I only have to make one cut.

for arrow length you need to check the bow makers and see what weight they say to use and stick with it, you can use a heaver arrow then they say but do not go any lighter. the heaver arrow will be slower and drop quicker but hit harder, if you use a too light arrow you will damage the bow

I would wait until I get the bow and then see what nock they reccomend and arrow weight and go from there. No matter what they reccomend just cutting the nock off and replaceing it will keep the feathers or vanes too close to the back of the arrow their should be at least a half an inch to 3/4 of an inch from the nock to the back of the feathers or vanes. For that reason if the arrow is straight I measure back from the front insert and cut then nock and then fletch. If they reccomend flat nocks regular inserts work fine and it is nice since it is threaded so you can make a puller to pull them out of stubborn targets. If they reccomend half moon nocks that is what I would use then. Like was mentioned I know Excaliber and Ten Point use the flat nock system and that has to do with the sear releasing from the top instead of the bottom from what I have heard. Horton uses half moon nocks as does Barnett I have no idea what PSE reccomends so I would wait until the bow gets there or look it up on the net or call them to find out if you do not want to wait until the bow gets to you. Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.
