Mossberg Bolt Action Shotguns
« on: March 20, 2007, 02:11:11 AM »
Hi folks

My latest Mossberg project is turning two 190's (16 gauge) bolt action shotguns into one working gun.

My Dad had one in the 1960's and I thought that it would make a nice grouse gun as it is light (6 1/4 lbs) and I never have got two shots at a grouse.

Does anyone here hunt with a Mossberg Bolt action gun?

Richard

A friend of mine was given the opportunity to hunt a really sweet spot last year, but the area was shotgun only and he'd never hunted deer with shotgun he was strictly a rifle man. He brought me a mossberg bolt action 20ga. shotgun and asked if I could mount a scope on it for him. He told me his shots would be 50yrds and under, but his eye's are getting bad, so he needed the scope. Out to 50yrds it shot real well. He took a nice 6 pointer and a doe with it, his furthest shot was 35 yrds. From what I've seen they're good little guns.

I had thought about doing that. How difficult was it to munt the scope? Did you have problems with bolt clearance or did you mount a pistol scope?

i have a 20 gage bolt that i rescued a few years ago.   gun sat neglected at a small gun shop outside of town for years.   its ejector was broken,  the stock beaten up and the 2 shot magazine was missing.   a few ordered parts, some refinishing and now she is  a sweety.    hasnt been hunting , but been to several spot shoots and have brought home the bacon a couple times.

also have a real sweet 410 bolt mossy with vari choke.   again i have used for spot shoots and clay pigeons.

dont get to hunt with either much,  mostly small game hunt with my mossy 22 cal rifles.   although spring turkey season is soon, but will probably use my mossy 500 with variable choke for that.

by the way,  my mossys are actually branded Westernfield by wards, but are made by mossy.

good shooting,

The extent of me mounting the scope consisted of put rings and a Bushnell shotgun scope on it. I turned it over to a friend and he drilled and dapped it for me. After shooting this gun I probably wouldn't mount a scope on it (personal choice only, the gun works great with a scope on) I would like to buy one some day because it was a joy to shoot.

Does anyone here hunt with a Mossberg Bolt action gun?

I hunted with my fathers Mossberg 185K 20 ga. from when I was about 9-10 yrs old until my mid-teens.  My father purchased it new in 1959.  I now have the 185K and have added a few cousins.  I make it a point to take a bolt action out for squirrels a few times each season.  My favorite is the 390 KB 16 ga.

From top:

185K 20 ga.
Revelation 325BB 20 ga.
390KB 16 ga.
184T .410 bore

Very nice to see a Mossberg forum.  Thanks GB.

Yep, the Mossberg forum is nice, and as far as those bot action guns pictured above, who could not like a 16!!! The .410 looks pretty good too!! ....<><.... :)

Something to watch for on the Mossberg bolt shotguns. I had one with the Revelation name on it. There is a small pin in the bolt of that model(sorry I don't remember the number) that had broken on mine. That pin keeps the bolt from turning too much. Well I had a failure to feed and brought the gun to waist level to work out the problem. While I was working the bolt I turned it too far back and as I pushed it in the striker hit the edge of the receiver and dropped causing an open breach detonation.
Of course this order of events came after it happened because at the time I didn't know.
Lucky for me the shot column was in the chamber so when the round went off it fractured on the side and the burning powder and gas escaped hitting me in the face but my glassed saved my eyes and I only ended up with a small cut on my forehead.

I would tell anyone with one of these to make sure that pin, which is spring loaded and used for dis-assembly of the bolt, is in place and working.

I also think that if that was the worst gun accident I have in my life I'm lucky.

Scotsman1866:  You were very fortunate.  Thank goodness you were not seriously injured.  I have seen the pin you refer to broken on a couple used Mossberg bolt actions.  I will definitely be more aware.  Thanks for the info.  ;)
