3 1/2 inch Foster slugs
« on: August 21, 2007, 05:05:48 PM »
Does anyone know if there are any ammo manufacturers that make a 12 Gauge 3 1/2" Foster style slug?
I've searched online and haven't been able to come up with anything.

Deer.

I have a smoothbore with a 3 1/2" chamber that shoots both 2 3/4" and 3" Remington sluggers and Brenneke's like crap so I wanted to try a 3 1/2 to see if it made any difference.

What kind of a choke does it have?  I have on old Mossberg 500 with a short cylinder bore and I can only describe the recoil with 2 3/4" 1 Oz slugs as brutal.  I filled the stock bolthole with #2 shot and that helped some.  I finally went to a rifled cantilevered barrel and the extra weight and length made it 'shootable".  I can only imagine what the recoil from a 3 1/2 " slug might be.  If your gun has choke tubes you might try a rifled one.  I have one on my Rem 11/87 and it shoots just as well as the Mossberg with the fully rifled barrel.  I just shoot Foster type slugs through mine but both guns will shoot 3-inch groups from the bench at 50 yards.  If you find a 3 12" slug let us know what it feels like to shoot one,

the only 3 1/2 slugs I ever found were the lightfield commanders but I think they are a sabot hybred. If you are worried about bullet jump in your chamber you may want to look at Hasting slugs I think they claim that there design does not allow the slug to jump in the long chamber Kurt

I've tried improved cylinder and full chokes and the results were the same with both. I haven't tried the Hastings slugs yet. I think if the Hastings slugs doesn't work I'll try a rifled choke.

I have a 10 gauge and have shot 3 1/2 slugs. they are 1 3/4 oz federal.they held a good group and recoil wasn't bad.
I would like to find some 12 gauge 3 1/2 also or reload some with about a 1 1/2 oz slug.  :)
