Is it an 840 or a 340 ?

The 840 precedes the 340.

840's usually go for slightly less than a 340 does.  A 340 in average condition, on the auction websites, usually goes anywhere from $250 to $350.  Bluing, stock dings, and whether it was bored and tapped for a scope, whether it wears a scope, and original sights, all play a part in pricing.  There will be a slight decrease in price for an 840, unless it is in real nice condition.

Late in 2005, I saw a Savage 340 D, in .222, that was NIB with original papers, and was priced at $499.  I believe that was a bargain.  In a 340, .223 rem and .225 win command higher prices.

Both the 840 and 340 are well known for their double heat treated Receivers, and how hard they are to drill and tap for scope mounts.  Over the years more than one drill bit / tap was broken by people trying to drill / tap those Receivers.

I am about to get rid of my 340E in .22 Hornet.  It turned out to be a dust collector in my Gun Cabinet.

Buying a nice 840 or 340 to use will not disappoint you.  They are tough and accurate, and from a time before parts were cheapened. Both will probably outlast anything mass produced today.
