Best scope for 25-06 15" Encore?
« on: April 14, 2007, 11:18:12 AM »
I want to scope my new Encore and at first thought I'd just go with the Leupold 2X handgun scope.  Then I got to think'n about the fact that this gun will have considerably longer range then my other handguns and thought maybe the 2.5-7 scope would be a wiser choice.  The 2X is just $300 whilst the 2.5-7 is over $450 but I'd really like to do this right.  Any thoughts?

If you don't want to spend the money on the Leupold variable handgun scope, put a Bushnell 2X6X32 on it. I use them on my long range handguns and they hold up to recoil just fine.

You might think went a bit overboard but I put a Burris 3-12 on mine.  It is a great scope allowing you to get close to your work.  :D

With the longer range potential of the .25-06 I too would opt for the 3x12x Burris LER Handgun Scope. I have two of these scopes (1 on a Super 14 .22 LR Match Contender and the other 1 on a Super 14 .223 Remington Contender) and think they are a great scope. I picked mine up from an internet site for like $331.00 shipped.

I think it depends on your intended use. If only for deer, etc. the 2-6X  Bushnell 3200 or Burris 2-7X will be fine. If you want to include prairie dogs and rockchucks as well as long range coyotes, I'd use the Burris 3-12X.

Although I would automatically put a 3-12 on if it was me I agree with Ken's post.
"depends on your intended use."
On second thought, if it was me I might put a rifle scope on it ;D

I know Redhawk likes the Bushnell Trophy handgun scopes but I've sworn off of them since Bushnell didn't honor their warranty on one I had on a 460 S&W Mag. that broke.  They said it had been "abused."  They would probably work fine on a 25/06 though and until it broke I liked it.

I like the Thompson/Center Recoil proof variable scopes and at least for me, a 2-7X scope is plenty.  I have a 3-9X scope and pretty much keep it set on 6X and had to turn it down to 3X in a close range hunting situation.

I have a couple of the Leupold 2X handgun scopes as well and they seem to hold up well to heavy recoil but I think a 25/06 deserves more magnification than shorter range handgun rounds.

Thanks for the input, guys.  That gives me something to mull over.  BTW, is there any advantage of the fine plex over the normal one or vice versa on the Buris?  And another thing, is there any mounting system that's superior to the other?  I have the TSOB system on my FA 454 and it seems to work just fine.

Dusty,
Get a weaver style base (picatinny) and a set of Burris Signature Zee Rings.
They have handles everything from 250 Sav AI to my 7mm Dakota and you can build minutes into the rings if you decide to stretch her wings a bit ;D
