Revolver VS. Contender, 41 Mag.....
« on: June 20, 2007, 04:18:17 PM »
Since this is for 41 mag, I thought  I'd start another thread rather than continue the one on 44mag rev. vs. contender.......

The revolvers are a Ruger  New Model Blackhawk 4 5/8" in 41 Remington Magnum, and a Ruger Redhawk Hunter, 7 1/2" in 41 Mag.
The Contender has a 10' barrel, also 41 Rem Mag.

Three  different loads and bullets were compared. The one load I really wanted to compare won't chamber in the Blackhawk.

Load  #1: 210gr Hard Cast  Lead Semi Wad Cutter [LSWC], Accurate Arms #9 powder:

  NMBH            REDHAWK                  CONTENDER
1305 fps          no data                        1526 fps

Load #2:   210gr Remington Jacketed Soft Point [JSP],  Alliant Blue Dot Powder

NMBH           REDHAWK                CONTENDER
1230                1359                        1460

Load #3:   230gr hard cast Keith type LSWC,  Accurate Arms #9 powder:

                  REDHAWK                CONTENDER
                   1357                          1513

I havn't looked at your 44 mag post yet, but this certainty makes sense as the Contender doesn't have to make the cylinder to forceing cone "leap", which causes the loss of power in any revolver when compared to a  closed chamber gun.

That's true Dave. Also T/C generally have long throats. This will allow you to load heavy cast bullets(gas check) without hitting the lands. But let me say this MUST BE CHECKED with a dummy round.
always be safe and pass it on to a young hunter
