new Huntsman/range report
« on: March 25, 2007, 10:55:41 AM »
Finally got to take the new huntsman out to really stretch her legs. I had swapped stocks and put a set of Firesights on her this winter. I was shooting 100gr pyrodex pellets and Barnes Spit fire sabots in 245gr. first shoot at 50yds was high and left. Six or seven more got her close to to where I wanted it. Took the last 4 shots at 100yds. Had 1 flier, most likely my fault, and the other three were inside of 3 1/2 inches. One thing I noticed, after about 4 or 5 shots it was getting real hard to load a sabot, and I was getting delayed ignitions. Had to clean it out to get the sabots to seat all the way down, and this took care of the delays too. Also, after getting her sighted in my point of impact was same at 50yds and at 100yds, the groups were just a little larger is all.

What did you do to clean your bore at the range? As the weather warms up here, I'll be draggin' more and more stuff to the range . . . I guess cleaning materials is next. My Huntsman is my first muzzle loader -- BP fouling sure does build up fast.

yes it does build up fast. I have a muzzle loader box that I carry everything in. The cleaning stuff I believe is Hoppes. It's some stuff my dad had when he was into muzzle loading some 30 years ago. It still works. I do take along alot of patch's. I just run 2 wet patch's thru then a bunch of dry ones. That seemed to work ok for me with the sabots I was using.

I had about that same accuracy with pellets.  With loose power and swabbing with a wet and then a dry patch between shots  I cut that down to 1.5''.

I had the same problem with the pellets, but have switched to loose powder and voila! No more hang fires!

I shoot 90 gr of triple 7 loose with a 245 grain sabot winchester projectile and regularly shoot in 2 inches at 100 yards.

 God, I love this rifle!
