Adding comb height for scope
« on: March 21, 2007, 02:28:00 PM »
Has anyone tried one of these stick on comb pads on a straight stock handi? I need an add on because I am using the youth stock and they aren't offered with the scope comb. I want to continue to teach my daughter good shooting form and I think this will help here get a better cheek to stock weld and keep her eye in line with the scope.

I thought H&R/NEF used to offer youth stocks in Monte Carlo, I know I have seen them in years past. You could just buy a cheap used pallet wood stock and cut down for use until your daughter grows into an adult stock, or better still i If you are teaching her on a .22 LR or some other rimfire with no recoil just get an adult Monte Carlo and remove the recoil pad. That is just about the length the youth stocks are....<><.... ;)

The problem with these pads...is the glue...I've had them come loose in the summer time heat before..

You have other options...If you want a finished product that you can adjust to fit the rifle to your daughter...I will suggest these...https://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=8740&title=ADJUSTABLE+RECOIL+PAD They work real good and allow you to adjust it in ways that getting a close to if not perfect fit for you and her...These have the black plastic plate that is fitted to the stock...They work...but if you contact the company..you might be able to get a aluminum one like what I have on my custom 270 Ultra..here's what it looks like...

The nice thing about the curved pad..it didn't change the length of pull over the factory original one...

Another option is to get a uncle Mikes or Bob Allen shell holder from Walmart..and add some soft foam rubber under it to get the correct height she or you need..I've recommended this as well...and have done that with all of my Handi's at one time or another and even my Marlin lever guns...and my current  Marlin 45-70 XLR. You won't be able to adjust the toe in or out..nor the amount of cast off as you can with the Morgan set up..nor change from a shotgun type pad to the curved one as I have...but it will work.

People have added all kinds of padding and put elastic ammo holders over them.
Works OK
Also it's cheap and easy.

I cut down the original Monte Carlo stock for my son's first Handi when he was 8.  Now he is 18, but the shorter stock still is his favorite since he is a short person.  The cut down stock still fits his smaller stature better than a full size stock.  He and his mother still use the cut down stock, and youth stocks on their guns.  Also when they commendier one of my Handi's they change and put their stocks on my guns.

As for a cheek pad to raise the comb?  There is a leather cheek pad made, I think Cabela's sells it, that is a lace on affair.  Can be changed from one gun to another, and adjustiable for differant shooters.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
