45/70 handi issue problem
« on: December 30, 2006, 09:36:06 AM »
I noticed some side slack in my 45/70 handi and took it down and noticed the part of pivot lug is gone and probably has been frorm the day it was made. Does this need to be fixed. the rifle shoots good. I know H&R only shows a 2 year warranty. I wonder what they will want to charge to fix this.

They're real good about making repairs with no charge long after the 1yr warranty is up. Give em a call next Wednesday when they reopen and make arrangements to get it fixed, toll free number is in the FAQs. ;)

Got the rifle back with a new barrel on it no charge. Now the issue is real light primer strikes/ miss fires. I did some measuring and there is .011 from the base of the rim and the end of the breech. I do not have a set of gages for the 45-70 yet, but I think this is a little to much does anyone know what it should be. I though they would be flush. If the headspace is off I suppose my only recourse is to send it in again. The barrel to action fit is less that .001. A it will close on a .001 ribbon put you cannot pull it out.

The rim recess on all four of my barrels is .075" to .078" deep, Rem and Starline brass have a .065" thick rim, so that makes about .010-.013" head space, although the ejector claw may keep it against the breech face so it's not an issue. I've had some no fires with Rem 9½ primers, but I attributed that to a bad batch of primers which I also experienced in a non-NEF firearm.

If it's an extractor barrel, the extractor may be allowing the rim to recess too far and would result in too much headspace, mine are all ejector barrels, so even tho there is too much headspace, the ejector claw holds the rim against the breech.

I've seen this issue on other barrels, where the barrel face wasn't even and the chamber was cut too deep, my fix was to flat file the barrel face so the cartridge rim was flush with the barrel face, then fit the barrel to a frame.

Other that creating a stop for the extractor claw, returning it to H&R is probably the best choice. If you do that, I'd call them and ask to talk to Gordon and get it straightened out, once and for all! :-\

Thanks Quick. Well I have circumvented the problem we will see if there are any case issue's I increased the firing pin penetration by filing off .010 from the face of the hammer causing it to push the firing pin in an additional .010. I was able to get all the previously misfired rounds to go off and didn't have any misfires on the new reloads. The auccracy of this barrel is going to be good. I will shoot clover leafs at 100 yds now.

Hopefully this won't cause problems with any other barrels you put on it..like pierced primers for those that have tighter tolerances.

I doubt that it will. The orginal barrel would occasionally misfire also but we saw less of it as the gun aged probably got gunk in the rim recess that help hold it out. I'm not sure I will add another barrel to this receiver anyway.
