Barrel Dimensions
« on: March 20, 2007, 11:17:18 AM »
I just ordered a second barrel for my 45-70 (22") Handi.  The barrel I ordered is a .223 bull barrel 24" long.  Can anyone tell me what the dimension of the .223 bull barrel is at the forestock?

I have glass bedded the 45-70 barrel and it shoots well, just wondering if I will need to change the method of bedding to the rubber washer style when I get the rifle back so that I can interchange barrels.  Wouldn't it be lucky if they were both the same dimension?

H&R only puts one size channel in all of their forends, whether it's for a superlight or a bull barrel, if that gives you an idea of what to expect. My 223 Ultra Varmint barrel measures .904" at the muzzle end of the forend, my .45-70 with Ultra forend measures .895" at the same spot. You'll find that barrel dimension vary even in the same calibers, they aren't all identical, so forend fit will vary too. ;)

Tim,
.904" and .895" seem awfully close to me.  If they don't remove the glass bedding when they fit the .223 barrel I'll try it with the original bedding to see how both barrels shoot.

Thanks for the information!

Hmmm...guess I could buy a second forarm for the other barrel.

If the gun is at the factory now then this is the time to do it, no extra shipping since they will send it back in the same box if you add it to the order. If you decide to do so just call them by phone....<><.... :)
