7x57 bolt gun?
« on: April 14, 2007, 06:36:16 PM »
Does anyone know if any company currently chambers rifles in 7X57 Mauser? The last ones I saw were Rugers I think.
shot placement is everything.

Ruger and CZ do. Most likely other European made guns do also but they might not be imported to the US in that chambering. Sako and Tikka come to mind.

I know for sure that CZ does, because I have seen one at the range.  I didn't shoot it, but I saw it.  The owner had handloads (don't know the specifics), but it did have plastic tip bullets.  He said that he loaded his ammo to .280 Rem performance.  The only thing that I can confirm is that his gun and load were quite accurate, getting what appeared to be 1MOA or better (his target was 2 tables next to mine).  Of course this doesn't mean that all CZs in 7x57 will shoot the same.

Personally, I like the 7mm-08 over the 7x57 for two reasons: 1) the 7mm-08 is a shorter cartridge, and 2) the 7mm-08 has a far larger selection of factory ammo available.  The benefit(s) of the 7x57 is that: 1) it has a "history," and 2) if you handload, your handloads can be loaded to higher velocities than the 7mm-08 and, from what I understand, be loaded close to .280 velocities.

I know that Mauser has stopped making the 7x57...Remington made one of their Classic series in 7x57.
Here is the Mauser website to see what they are doing with the 7mm:

CZ USA on its most current website does not offer the 7x57 Mauser.  I too have seen ones in 7x57 by CZ USA so know there are some around.  Ruger still has the 7x57 listed for sale in select rifle options.  The No 1 Sporter in 7x57 Mauser I know is offered.

Thanks gentlemen. I do have a 7mm-08 and really like it. I have a military 7x57 Mauser that has a very nice bore. I have thought about making it into a sporter. I also have had several 280's but do not have one right now.
shot placement is everything.
