Going price for a used Contender 30-30
« on: February 23, 2007, 02:12:25 PM »
What would be considered a rasonable price for a older Contender 30-30 with 10" barrel. Blued with wood furniture. I've been looking at trying to get my first Encore or Contender pistol for hunting. I've seen the Contenders used for any where from $375 to $700 for similar configuration

Assuming it was in excellent condition, $225 for the frame and $150 for the barrel would be tops for me.  I also would not buy a 10 inch 30/30 barrel for several reasons.

1.  With that barrel length and cartridge, the muzzel blast will be more horrendous than otherwise (I could take it...just be sure you can).
2.  If it doesn't already come with a muzzel brake, you might want one which will lose you some barrel length.
3.  Because of case construction, a 30/30 has a bit less accuracy potential than some other cartridges.  No to say that accuracy can't be good, just that you could probably do better with another cartridge.

Also, unless you intend to fire rimfire cartridges, I would recommend the Encore over the Contender; it has so many more cartridge options and won't cost you that much more.

Now T/C offers rimfire barrels for the Encore.  I payed a whopping 330$ for a new stainless frame, if you have a friend with an FFL you could easily save 10% on that.
