Quick ?? for reloaders
« on: February 21, 2007, 02:11:20 PM »
I just got all of my stuff to reload in (brass, dies, and in the process of mounting press)  Should i full length size my brass and then trim to length?  it is all new brass for a 204 and a 500 sw.  I dont have anything to trim the 204 yet, so i am just going to size it for now until i buy a trimmer for it.  I noticed a few of the necks on the 204 brass is not real uniform roundwise so i am assuming i should go ahead and full length size these??  when i am sizing these exactly how much lube do i use?? i got an ink pad from walmart that i am going to put my lube on.  Also, since the 500 is straight wall, do i need to size and trim these before i start loading?? thanks a lot guys, i really appreciate your help

I lay all the new brass on a paper towel with the necks facing me, then use Hornady One Shot spray, twice, one run down the line to get the inside and outside of the neck, then another run on the body of the case, let em dry for a minute or two, then  roll the entire row of brass 180º and repeat on the other side. Then I full length resize em, then trim em to the length of the shortest of the bunch just enough to clean up the case mouth. Not everyone does the trimming until after the first firing, I do because there's no way for each piece to be the same if you don't, specially if you crimp, new brass varies a lot in length, by as much as .003"-.005", if you don't trim,  bullet pull won't be the same for each round.... at least that's my opinion, anyway. ;)

I use a Lyman Universal trimmer I bought on Ebay for $20 for my .204, I cut a .22 cal pilot down to .20 cal in my drill press with a file, for everything else, I use a Lee trimmer in a cordless drill when I can.  I also bought the power adapter for the Lyman trimmer so I could run it with a drill, I also use it for my .45-120 brass which is a lot of work hand cranking it!! :o

im going to use the lee on a drill for my 500 brass, and am probably going to buy a wilson trimmer for the 204.  i have heard it is one of the easiest to use as far as the "lathe" style go.  They also have a 204 pilot which is a little pricy, but the actuall trimmer is only 30 or so dollars.

thanks a lot tim

I'm with Tim on this one but I have been known to size & not trim if I just want to go & shoot in a hurry. Also I clean them after the sizing to get the lube off
That's my boy, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

Josh, dunno if you know it yet, but you need the large trimmer for the .500, the regular trimmer is too small. It doesn't come with the ball handle which is the only drawback.

After I trim, while the case is still in the lock stud, I champfer and deburr with the Lee tool which is actually too small for the .500 but will work if you hold the cutting edge against the inside of the case mouth, then use the knurled outside of the tool to smooth the outside of the case mouth.

Then I put a case brush inside the case and turn the drill on the clean out the inside, then, wrap a paper towel around the outside of the case and run it a bit more to wipe the case lube off.

The Lyman Universal is a lathe type, works very well, but not as good as the Lee case length gauge and lock stud since all it's good for is trimming.

yeah thanks for reminding me tim, i forgot to order it with the rest of my stuff.  I also have carbide dies for the 500 so no lube is needed.  do you think the lymon is a better trimmer than the wilson?  havnt heard much about it, but have heard the wilson is really liked.

Josh ...

I use the Oneshot like Tim does ... it is easy and does a great job. I use an old cookie sheet instead of paper towels and lay them all in a row and spray like Tim does. I then tip the sheet a little and let them row over and spray again. I tumble my brass after sizing to remove any spray that remains.

Everyone reloads a little different so read your manuals and establish a process of your own. I too always full length size new brass. I also reload for my .357 mag and .45 colt revolvers and Marlin rifle and I size before using new brass but do not trim these. I have the RCBS carbide 3 die sets and as you know you do not need lube with these.

The .500 is the only pistol round I load for, I got a new RCBS steel die set for $12.50, but I would have got a carbide set if the opportunity for the savings hadn't happened. :D
