Go .308    Real nice round and plenty of surplus around.  Can load it from 90 gr up to 200 gr.

Gotta do my taxes  :(

I'm gonna say both the 280 and the 25-06, both with 26" barrels!

Well, like the .45-70, everyone should have a .30-30......and/or a .30-06....and a .280 too, not necessarily in that order, but those would be my picks. ;)

Hi stimplyu, you got a pretty good collection started there. Why not get a 25-06 and a 30-06.Then next year get the 22 hornet and 280.

Well lets see,

I would go with the .308 for several reasons, 1. It shoots good and components for reloading it are easy to find, 2. if the defecation hits the fan, well there will be 7.62 Nato ammo out there to scrounge.

And for fun I would do a 7mm of some sort, probably the .280. Now I would also stock up on powder, bullets and primers with that check  ;D

I would choose 2 out of these 5:

.204   ...   7mm-08   ...   .280   ...   30-30   ...   45/70 BC   ...

Boy ... that wasn't much help ... something else to consider, which I am "trying" to due this year, is fine tuning the ones you already have. By this I mean, upgrading a scope or two, changing out stocks, etc. If none of that is needed, you're back to the 5 choices above ... in my opinion.

Ok here is what i am thinking , ya ya , i know that can be a bad thing .  ;) I flat hate the 22 Hornet , thats why the 218 . not real fond of the 308 , and i have a 270 so here it goes .

Get the 30/30 to shoot cast bullets ( i love cast ) and a 25/06 to go with the 243 for mid range work , but i realy like the 30/06 so i may have to get 3 .  ;)

All the ones i have except the 450 are MOA guns and are set & ready to go , will have to get atleast one more scope and 2 sets of rings + bullets , dies and brass for the 25 . this is making my head hurt .  >:(

Marv , the 32 was made from a 22 mag. Acc. bull barrel as for the ejector we just re-worked the one that came with the barrel , not a hard shell to remove .

I vote the 25-06 it shoots pretty flat and should be good for varmints and such to at least 400 yards.Just my thoughts.

Well, it looks like you definitely have your Varmint calibers worked out. So unless you just want to go for a 204.....as much fun as they are and man, excellent shooters!...I think you will be fine with what you got in this area.
My vote is for 357Mag and 30-06 or 280.
357 because it's just fun, inexpensive to shoot, and not real noisy. Plus you can shoot 38specials for what it's worth.
30-06 because it's a great ol' cartridge. Someone once told me, "It won't do everything perfectly, but it will do a lot of things very good". Plus the 30cal bullet selection is awesome to say the least.
The 280 is an awesome caliber too and sports a nice long 26" tube. And arguably more versatile than the 270, due to the large 7mm bullet selection.
Personally, it's hard for me to justify having both a 270 and a 280. When one or the other will do just fine and are very similar.
Perhaps a 35Whelen if you can find one, or if you stumble on one- a 30-06 UltraComp...great barrels by the way.

Shaner

You had to go and say that , was at my local GS yesterday and he has a box of Cor-bon 500s and a set of Hornady dies that a guy ordered over a year ago , still sitting on the shelf , said he would sell me CHEAP just to get them gone .

By the way , you don't have a spare 30/30 or 30-06 barrel laying around that you want to part with ?

.357 and a .280, .357s are my favorite rifles with the .45-70 close behind, The .280 just seams right.  I just can't make up my mind if I like my .30-30 or not. 8)

Does it have to be a standard cartridge?..Why not a custom caliber..one that you can make out of a factory barrel...? If it does..then the 25-06 would work nice for you..and is fun to work with...plenty of bullets available for it..I haven't tried the 204...but from what has been told about them..seem to be a real good choice...From what you already have...it looks like your just wanting something different since you have all your bases covered..

Me...I want a BR capable single shot in a 6mm...and plan to have one by summer...The easiest would be to re-chamber a 243 Bull barrel to a 6mm Improved..and would be a real hoot with some of the lighter weight match bullets (90 grains and under)...and should be deadly on deer with something like the 95 grain CT silver ballistic tip and the 55 grainer as well...Would really make some red mist way out there on PD's and Coyotes  ;)

No one should be without a 30/30
and the 30-06 will kill most anything.
The 25-06 is a nice all around round but it
is between your 243 and 270.
I would save it for next time if you have to wait.

30-30 in a Handi is a natural. I'll be adding one soon.

Also, I used to shoot IHMSA production class with a 10" Contender in .357 Maximum. From what I understand, it's a simple process to ream the chamber of a Mag to a Max.

When shooting IHMSA I had a chrograph that I checked things out with and the velocities from a 10" barrel with the .357 Maximum were very surprising. I have no dount that a properly loaded .357 Maximum from a 22" barrel would produce energy comparable to a 30-30,... and from a straight walled case using much less powder.

Very easy to load for too. I put together many thousand .357 Maximum cartridges using a set of Lee carbide dies for the 38/357.

Powerful, accurate, economical, easy to load,.... I think I've just selected my next barrel.
