22 hornet/handi
« on: February 11, 2007, 02:47:45 AM »
Went to the gun show last weekend and another handi followed me home.  This one is a 22 hornet.  Almost had a heart attack when I went to buy a box of ammo at Academy.  It was $25 a box!!!!  Then I noticed that there were 50 rounds in the box instead of the usual 20.  OK, I felt a little better.  Went to the range yesterday and tried it out.  Once I got it on the paper at 100 yds, it seems to be grouping about 1 1/2 to 2 inches.  Didn't think that was too bad for the first time with factory ammo.  Did have one problem, 4 out of the 25 rounds that I fired had pierced primers!  Rember that this is Remington factory ammo (45 gr HP).  Anybody else ever have this problem?

Have fun with it . Had you bought a 400.00 dollar gun that ammo would not have seemed so high. Nice thing about a handi you have money left for shells. Play away.  tireman

I have one.  That Remington ammo was the least accurate in mine.  Not sure what your scope is or of your shooting the iron sights?  Once you lap your bore and with a scope near 5 shot moa @ 100 and certainly 3 shot moa.  Try some Winchester 46 gr hp & Hornady 35 br Vmax.  Vastly differant poi with those two btw.

I just came in from Fox hunting out back with mine.  I like it.

Look on the frame! Is the frame an SB1? It sounds like you may have a shotgun frame with a rifle barrel on it. I fitted my hornet barrel to my shotgun frame and with standard pressure loads I had the same problem. It stems from the firing pin hole on a shotgun frame being larger. I remedied this on my hornet by using Hogdon Lil Gun in my reloads. You get good velocity and the pressure is lower. I have only used WSR primers and am gonna try some others to see the results.

Thats just my experiance. There is a section in the FAQ part to tell u if its SB1 or SB2.

Maybe Quick can link it to you.

Frames aren't marked SB1 or SB2, but you may be able to tell the difference in their appearance, but the only sure way to find out what frame you have is to call H&R CS toll free and give them the serial number and ask em, (866)776-9292. Pics of the frames can be found in the FAQs, here's a direct link to the thread.

I have the same exact setup. I shoot my Hornet barrel on both my receivers (SB1 and SB2), and sometimes on the shotgun frame I will get a pierced primer. I shoot the 45 grain Remington HP's and probably 3 or 4 out of the 50 will pierce the primer. I don't have any problems with the SB2 receiver. I think the difference is just in the size of the firing pin hole on the shotgun frame. Mine shoots well though, it will group 1" at 100 yards.
