My new 527 hornet punching holes in primers
« on: February 12, 2007, 05:28:56 PM »
I just got a 527 hornet and took out my pet load to try it out and almost every one had a hole in the primer. The firing pin looks a little rough but I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. I was using rem primers, I loaded up some federals because they have thicker cases. I havent had a chance to tr them yet.  What have you guys found with CZ's? It seems to me I have heard about this before but I cant remember.

You say this is a pet load, which is fine to have, but I will say you should start over and work it back up in the new gun.  If the bore is tighter or some other variable in the new gun, your pressures might be higher than in your old gun.  I had a load I shot tons of in my S&W 629, which isn't the strongest gun in he world.   Well, I figured my T/C Contender would handle it with ease.  I fired 1 round, and had to remove the barrel to tap out the case.  No harm done, but it taught me to not assume guns will all handle the same loads, no matter how "strong" we think they are.  Try dropping back to start loads, and see if the problem goes away, and work back up if it does.  I have a Hornet that will pierce primers, but only when I get carried away with the powder charge.  Let us know what you find out.

I wondered about that so I loaded an empty case with no bullet or powder and fired it off it pierced the primer,so I loaded the lil gun load with federal primers and had no problems and it shot great, so I guess I wont worry about it I just wont use rem primers in my Cz. Thanks though dubber, I appreciate the reply.

Glad you had a handle on it by yourself.  I would probably do the same as you and just skip the Rem primers.  You could polish the firing pin to see if it matters.  Your gun may just have an overly healthy firing pin spring.  I had an old Mauser that would almost knock a primer through the case!  It had one heck of a spring on it.  The sheetrock in my loading room still has a hole in it where the pin got away from me during reassembly.  I hope you enjoy your hornet.
