Picked up a 17 hmr
« on: February 09, 2007, 07:32:37 PM »
Well I stopped by sportsmans on the way home tonight. I try to stop by atleast once a week to check the handi selection. Was hoping to find a ultra light hornet but no luck there so I ended up with a 17 HMR sportster. ;D ;D ;D When I got home I put my extra set of choat varmit stocks on it and mounted a 4-16X50 pentax gameseeker I got from evilbay last week. Going to try to get to the range this weekend. Hope she shoots good. I got some hornady 17g vmax and cci 17g hps to start(thats all they had :().

thanks for posting how your hmr is performing shaner! i hope cowboy post back with the results on his with the choate varmit stock.i have arthritis  bad in my hands. i now find myself needing a thumbhole type stock! i have a ultra varmit in 22 mag. that has really impressed me. it is hard for me to shoot with this inoperable stiff thumb!! the gunstock inc. thumbholes look ok but they are pricey.midway has the choate stock set for less than what just the stock cost  from gunstock inc.thanks again for the info shaner!! take care and have fun shooting!!!!

The more you shoot it the better it gets.  Took aboutn two boxes of ammo before it got really tight.  Now at 100yds it's one ragged hole.  So go out and shoot it.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

None at all.   ;)

I swapped out the synthetic for a cin lam stock and forend.  I believe it came off of an Ultra Varmint rifle.  The barrel channel is wider than the synthetic and fit the receiver very tightly.  The barrel stud rubs slightly on the rear inside of the hole in the forend and the barrel is completely free floated with the rubber o-ring.  I've put probably 4-500 rounds through that barrel.  Just about every 17 gr. v-max that they have out for it and the 20 gr. CCI Gamepoints.  The v-max bullets will do that all day long.  The Gamepoints shoot about a 1" group, usually, but will throw low and to the left everytime.   I have not tried the CCI 17 gr. HP's or the Hornady 20 gr. XTP's, but will as soon as I find some.

 I think I know where cowboyup lives, I heard they have a foot of the White stuff on the ground.
 He may not be able to get the range for a few days, Maybe reason for delay in posting
 a report on the new fire arm. Marv.

Yep Marv is right we got about a foot last night. I got to the range last sat but a call from work cut that trip short. I did shoot about 20 rounds before I had to go. Wind was blowing bout 30-35 Accuracy was not very good (2-3"@100) but I think it was more me and the wind than the gun. Ill let yall know when I get back out to shoot some more.

  Cowboy;
  You will be pleased with the accuracy of that bull barrelled .17 Sportster !  I sure was pleased and surprised by mine...which seems to like Hornady V-max most..enjoy !

  BTW: A couple feet of snow in my neighborhood is just a "dusting" !...LOL
