.223 twist rates
« on: February 03, 2007, 09:29:42 AM »
Quick, and anyone else that have tried them.  Do these weights work for the Handi? Got this from another thread.   My brief experience is that for the Handi these don't work.  I know my 1:12 old Handi barrel won't shoot anthing heavier than a 50 gr bullet accurately.  I have not shot my new Ultra yet with a 1:9 twist.  Just wanting to know what bullet others are using for the Ultras with the newer twist.

1:7" for bullets heavier than 70gr.
1:8" for bullets 62gr to 70gr.
1:9" for bullets up to 70gr.
1:12” for bullets up to 60gr.
1:14" for bullets up to 55gr.
1:15" for bullets up to 55gr. driven 4,100 pfs or more
1:16” for bullets up to 55gr. driven 4,300 fps or more

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Rog, the best I recollect the 1:9" twist 223 Handi shooting here is a 68gr bullet by one shooter recently, but for the most part it shoots the same lighter bullets that the 1:12" does well with. Several shooters liked the 63gr Sierra and 64gr Win PP in the 1:12", but those that tried them with the 1:9" weren't happy that I recollect, but it could also have just not been the right load that they tried. I've only shot up to 52gr in my 1:12" Ultra, so I can't help ya much, sorry. :-\

Mornin sourdough i recently got some fmj for my .223 which is 62 gr, these slugs measure.910". I read an article about length of bullet to bore dia., long story short my 1-12  shoots these as well as 52gr sierras ;D.I think the length is the key to it working.I think these 62 gr are imi reclaimed bullets. What are the lengths of some of the bigger slugs tried? ???   My 2 cents     Mike
