Tuning for best accuracy?
« on: January 29, 2007, 05:06:10 AM »
I own two NEF/H&R's.  A stainless with bull barrel in .17HMR, and a blued with walnut 45/70.  Both have been shot very little and I've owned them for awhile now...The reason why they're idle is that I am getting HORRIBLE accuracy..or at least what I'd consider horrible.  The .17 in particular shot terrible groups with two of the only brands that were selling .17 hmr at the time.. The 45/70 was getting 2-3" groupings at 50 yards scoped and I remember the .17 being very irradic 2-5" @ 50 scoped as well.

What can I do to increase the accuracy of these guns?  I really like the single shot and the simplicity of these types of guns.

Start by reading the accurizing tips in the FAQs and Help sticky, that should go a long ways in getting you on the road to accuracy. Trying different ammo in the 17hmr will be necessary, mine shoots the Hornady Vmax very well, but doesn't do well at all with the CCI ammo, Rem and Federal aren't too bad. The .45-70 is one of the best shooting calibers H&R makes, I have 4 of them, they all shoot extremely well, I suspect yours will to with a little help! Also be aware that the transfer bar requires a full pull of the trigger for consistent firing pin strikes, anything less allows the t-bar to drop and the hammer won't hit the firing pin with full force causing erratic ignition.

Tim or others, when there is a light hammer strike due to not pulling the trigger through, can you see the difference in the primer strike?  Just curious.

Gdbyrd, like Tim said, dig into the FAQ's.  MOST of your questions will be answered there.  Tons of information to sift through.  Then after you have mulled over all that, you will probably have some more specific questions to ask.  These guys will have you straightened out in no time.   8)

I've never experienced it cuz I knew from the get go, but there have been reports here of no fires due to it. Also, several rifles, mostly rimfires have been returned to H&R for improper t-bar operation which is related to the issue. ;)

Ah!  I'm sorry guys.  I looked through the FAQ this morning but kinda skimmed as I was short on time.  I'll give it another go over, thanks for the direction.
