fitting 44 mag barrel
« on: January 28, 2007, 10:46:16 AM »
I have been reading around on some of the various fixes for a barrel that fits to loose(JB weld etc.).I may get a chance to aquire back a 44 mag barrel I owned about 10 years ago,but can't get the reciever back that fit it.I already know it will fit loose on my new stainless reciever. My question is has anyone tried to TIG weld in the radius where the barrel pin fits and remachine it untill it fits properly(mill or grind to size)? My thought was to use a dowel the same size as the pin in the reciever,(clamped in to position)indicate it in, set stops on mill so it will repeat back to same zero, weld, and then start about .005 away and work it in untill I get the right fit.(I read about the feeler gauge process).I work in a shop and have the tools to do this if it sounds like somthing that might work.
